Background
Jassim Mohamed Alseddiqi is an Emirati investor and financial executive best known for building Abu Dhabi Financial Group (ADFG), which he led as chief executive. Arab News reported in 2017 that he trained as an engineer, moved into finance in 2008, and by age 33 had made ADFG a major Abu Dhabi investment platform with ties to Abu Dhabi Global Market.
Under Alseddiqi, ADFG acquired a 48% stake in SHUAA Capital in 2016 in a transaction reported by Arab News at about $100 million. SHUAA’s own corporate history says ADFG and SHUAA completed their merger in 2019, creating a regional asset management and investment banking platform focused on public markets, private markets, debt and real estate.
His education is reported as engineering-focused: Gulf News says he holds a master’s in electrical engineering from Cornell University, and Arageek reports a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has also been associated with board and chair roles at GFH Financial Group, Eshraq Investments and First Abu Dhabi Bank’s board management committee, as reported by Gulf Business in 2021.
As of the current SHUAA website reviewed, SHUAA lists Nabil Al Rantisi as Group CEO, so Alseddiqi’s SHUAA CEO role should be treated as historical rather than current.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Alseddiqi’s public-market strategy via ADFG’s Goldilocks fund was “constructive activism”: investing in companies whose intrinsic value was not recognized because of complex structures, mispricing, low research coverage, inefficient management or lack of specialist expertise, then adding value through board representation and management engagement.
- Through SHUAA private markets, the platform focuses on growth capital, special situations, patient capital and operational support, with an emphasis on companies that can improve performance organically or through bolt-on acquisitions.
- SHUAA’s private-markets sector focus includes technology, shipping, insurance, infrastructure, financial services and real estate, with MENA and GCC listed as core geographies.
- In technology, Gulf News quoted Alseddiqi saying he had been involved since 2008 and was an early investor in Uber, Snapchat and Zoom; he also described failures in startups as part of what informs future success.
- He appears to favor deals where the investor can bring strategic value beyond capital. On Anghami, he told Gulf News: “Entrepreneurs and owners of companies appreciate what we bring to the table.”
