Background

Jay Coughlon is a Denver-based private equity investor with more than 23 years of investing and platform-leadership experience. He began his career at Banc of America Securities, working in middle-market Financial Sponsor Leveraged Finance, before moving into direct private equity investing. He earned his degree in accounting and international business from Marquette University.

Prior to founding his own firms, Coughlon was a Managing Director and member of the Investment Committee at KRG Capital, a Denver-based private equity firm that managed more than $3 billion of capital. In 2013 he co-founded Lariat Partners, a lower-middle-market private equity firm launched with former KRG and RedCloud Capital executives. At Lariat he led control investments in fragmented industries, pursuing consolidations, management buyouts, recapitalizations, and growth-capital deals — typically in entrepreneur-managed, recurring-revenue businesses.

Coughlon later co-founded and now serves as Managing Partner of Fruition Partners (Fruition Private Equity), continuing the same lower-middle-market strategy. Fruition describes itself as combining "big-firm experience with small-firm agility," selectively investing in growth-oriented platforms and providing expansion capital and hands-on operational partnership. Since 2020 the firm reports having executed more than $650 million in transactions across 17 acquisitions and one platform recapitalization.

Beyond investing, Coughlon is active in Denver philanthropy: he is a board member and Campaign Committee co-chair for the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation and a founder and board member of the Mile High Five Foundation. He is a cyclist and skier and a father of three.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests via control private equity — buyouts, recapitalizations, management buyouts, and buy-and-build consolidations — rather than minority/angel checks.
  • Targets the lower middle market, roughly $2M–$20M EBITDA, with a strong preference for entrepreneur-managed, recurring-revenue businesses.
  • Sector focus: consumables, specialty agriculture, energy, environmental services, and healthcare services.
  • Pursues fragmented industries suited to consolidation / add-on ("buy-and-build") growth, often partnering with founders to scale a platform.
  • Positions the firm as offering a "kinder, gentler," entrepreneur-friendly PE approach — big-firm capability with small-firm responsiveness and hands-on operational support.

Notable Investments

  • Offen Petroleum — Denver-based independent fuels and lubricants distributor; Lariat invested in late 2017, executed transformative add-on acquisitions (Overland Petroleum in Utah and Allied Energy in Arizona), roughly doubling gallons distributed, then sold to Court Square Capital Partners in June 2019.
  • Fruition / Lariat portfolio companies (named on Fruition's site; deal detail limited, several marked as Coughlon's prior-firm deals): Five Star Parks, Avizent, EcoServ, Jacent, and Varel, among others.
