Background
Jean Kovacs is a veteran Silicon Valley technology executive and investor with over 30 years of experience building, leading, and funding enterprise software companies. She began her career in the 1980s as an early employee at Sun Microsystems (public 1986) and Frame Technology (public 1992), gaining firsthand exposure to the rapid growth trajectories of breakout technology firms. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Finance from Northeastern University (1983) and her MBA from Harvard Business School, forming the academic foundation for a career that would span operating roles, company-building, and venture investing.
Kovacs went on to co-found two successful companies. In 1990 she co-founded Qualix Group, a developer of reliability software for distributed computing, where she served as Executive Vice President overseeing engineering, marketing, services, and telesales. Qualix went public in 1997. In 1998 she co-founded Comergent Technologies, an enterprise e-commerce platform, and served as CEO through its acquisition by Sterling Commerce (a division of AT&T) in November 2006 for approximately $155 million in cash. Following the acquisition she briefly served as SVP of Corporate Marketing and Strategic Alliances at Sterling Commerce before transitioning to investing. She also served as interim CEO for two other companies during her career.
Today Kovacs is a Partner at Hillsven Capital, a San Francisco-based seed-stage venture capital firm founded in 2005 that focuses exclusively on enterprise software. She is also an Advisor at Illuminate Ventures and deeply involved in the angel investing community as Co-Chair of the Global Board of HBS Alumni Angels and President of its Northern California chapter. Outside of investing, she serves as Board Chair of BUILD, a nonprofit that introduces underserved youth to entrepreneurship. She has been named to the Silicon Valley Business Journal's list of Most Influential Women in Business and was honored by the Dean of Harvard Business School in 2014 for her leadership impact. Her work has been featured in Fortune, the Financial Times, Computerworld, Internet World, and InfoWorld.
Investment Thesis & Focus
Hillsven Capital invests exclusively in early-stage enterprise (B2B) software companies at the seed stage. The firm leads every round it participates in, writing checks of $500K to $2M and typically securing a board seat. Hillsven completes only two to three deals per year, favoring quality and deep engagement over volume.
Kovacs sources deals through "curated" channels: trusted accelerators (such as Alchemist Accelerator), investor referrals, portfolio CEO introductions, and enterprise customers who identify promising startups. The firm explicitly avoids cold inbound deal flow.
When evaluating founders, Kovacs prioritizes four qualities: (1) the ability to articulate a real problem paired with genuine domain expertise, (2) the capacity to attract and build strong teams, (3) tenacity -- noting that "less than 10 percent of companies have an easy route," and (4) coachability, especially for less experienced founders. Early traction is critical. The primary disqualifier is a lack of confidence in the founding team: "If we don't feel good about the founder and the founding team we won't invest." She cautions founders against "believing your own bullshit" -- pitching solutions without real market validation.
Hillsven takes an active, hands-on approach post-investment, treating each deal as a true partnership rather than a passive capital deployment.
