Background

Jean-Philippe Peugeot, born in 1953, is a sixth-generation member of the Peugeot industrial family and a graduate of the Institut Supérieur de Gestion (ISG) in Paris. He spent his executive career inside the automotive business, working at Automobiles Peugeot — including some eight years running a commercial subsidiary and roughly four years as director of Peugeot Parc Alliance — before moving into the family's governance and holding structures.

Following the death of his father, Pierre Peugeot, in 2002, he became Vice-Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PSA Peugeot Citroën (now Stellantis), a role he held to represent the family's reference shareholding. He had joined the board of FFP (Société Foncière, Financière et de Participations, the family's listed investment vehicle) as a director back on 28 June 1979 and served for decades as its Vice-Chairman.

His most senior role was at the head of Établissements Peugeot Frères, the top family holding company that controls Peugeot Invest. He served as its Chairman and CEO from 1 July 1998. In May 2021 the board separated the chairman and CEO functions as a corporate-governance upgrade: he became non-executive Chairman while Thierry Mabille de Poncheville took the CEO role, and a new sustainability/ESG function was created. In 2022, after about 26 years leading the family group, he handed the presidency of Établissements Peugeot Frères to Frédéric Banzet, while the broader family holding continued its generational succession (Robert Peugeot, then Édouard Peugeot as chairman of Peugeot Invest from May 2025).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Peugeot Invest, which describes itself as "a professional investor with family values, attached to its industrial history" and an active minority shareholder involved in governance, with a consistent long-term strategy.
  • Targets companies that are "leaders in their sector and offer significant growth potential," favoring diversification across uncorrelated economic cycles.
  • Direct investments: typically €75–250M per deal, taking a minimum ~5% stake in listed companies and 15–50% in unlisted companies.
  • Fund investments: €25–50M commitments into private-equity vehicles across the US, Europe and emerging markets, concentrated on leveraged buyouts, development capital and growth technology.
  • Long-horizon, patient capital: the family has been a reference shareholder of the Peugeot automotive group since 1966 and structures itself as a permanent, entrepreneurial family investor rather than a fixed-life fund.

Notable Investments

  • Stellantis (formerly PSA Peugeot Citroën) — ~7.7% anchor stake held via Peugeot 1810; the family's founding industrial asset and reference shareholding since 1966.
  • SPIE — French multi-technical engineering/services group; a core listed direct holding.
  • SEB — French small-appliance maker; Peugeot Invest exited its entire stake for ~€236M in February 2024.
  • Tikehau Capital / Tikehau Capital Advisors — alternative asset manager; sold its TCA stake in February 2023 at ~2x invested capital and ~15% IRR after seven years, then sold its remaining Tikehau Capital shares (~€58.3M) in March 2024, while remaining an investor in some Tikehau funds.
  • Private-equity fund portfolio — a book of LBO, development-capital and growth-technology funds across the US, Europe and emerging markets.
