Background
Jeff Greiner is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Northern Pacific Group (NPG), a Wayzata, Minnesota–based private equity firm he launched in 2012 alongside co-founder Scott Honour. NPG partners with owners and management teams of growing lower-middle-market companies, taking control or significant-minority positions and supporting them with both capital and operational involvement. Its tagline — "Driving. Collaborative. Achievement." — reflects a hands-on, value-creation posture rather than a passive, seed-stage angel model.
Greiner brings more than three decades of technology-focused investing and investment banking to the firm. Before founding NPG, he led technology, business, and financial-services investments at Norwest Equity Partners. Prior to that he was Group Head for RBC Capital Markets, running the firm's Global Technology Investment Banking practice. He was a Founding Partner of Wessels, Arnold & Henderson (WA&H), where he ran technology investment banking and continued in that role as the firm became Dain Rauscher Wessels in 1998 and then part of RBC Capital Markets after its 2001 sale. Across that period he launched and helped lead the WA&H Investments, DRW Investors, and DRW Venture Partners venture/private equity and mezzanine funds, which collectively made roughly 250 investments between 1987 and 2004.
Greiner earned a B.S. in Economics from Southern Methodist University in 1980 and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1983. He also serves as an Executive Partner at Tyree & D'Angelo Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm.
He is active civically in the Twin Cities, having served as a director of the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities, the Greater Twin Cities United Way, the Boy Scouts of America Northern Star Council, St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral (Cathedral Church of St. Mark Foundation), and the Beta Theta Pi Foundation. He has also sat on the boards of NPG portfolio companies including Delaget and Outsell.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established, cash-flow-generating lower-middle-market businesses — typically ~$10M–$100M in revenue — rather than pre-revenue or seed-stage startups.
- Seeks companies with double-digit organic revenue growth and/or a clear buy-and-build (acquisition-driven) growth strategy.
- Core sectors: technology and tech-enabled services, business & financial services, industrials, logistics and transportation, media/entertainment, and real estate.
- Prefers control or significant positions where NPG can partner closely with management to "create substantial value for all stakeholders," reflecting an operationally engaged, collaborative style.
- Upper-Midwest orientation, leveraging Greiner's and the firm's deep Twin Cities network, while investing across the U.S.
