Background
Jeff Moore is a Richmond, Virginia native and a long-time middle-market investment banker turned private investor. He co-founded Matrix Capital Markets Group in 1988 and served as its President and Managing Director for more than 25 years, participating in roughly 100 M&A transactions — including exclusive company sales, complex recapitalizations, and numerous management buyouts — before retiring from the firm. He earned both a B.S. in Business Administration and an MBA, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Richmond, and has held FINRA Series 62, 63, and 79 licenses.
In 2015, Moore co-founded RTK Family Capital, LLC with partner Jim Young. RTK is structured as a "family office"–style private investment firm: rather than raising pooled capital from outside limited partners, its principals fund deals largely with their own personal capital and take significant personal stakes in each company. All investment decisions are made jointly by Moore and Young, with no formal investment committee. The firm's stated philosophy is to "invest first in relationships and second in companies," pairing capital with an operating partner network (including Margaret Shaia and Jeff Coleman, who run portfolio companies as CEOs).
Moore's investing style is patient and long-hold rather than exit-driven — RTK positions itself as a natural home for family-owned and founder-led businesses seeking continuity of ownership. He is active in his community and faith-based organizations, having served on the advisory boards of Explore God and Crossover Healthcare Ministry, as a former board member of the Virginia chapter of YPO, and on the boards of portfolio companies including Acoustical Sheetmetal Company and Duravex.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Buy-and-hold control investing, not venture: RTK acquires 60%+ of privately-owned middle-market companies and intends to hold long-term, prioritizing company longevity over a typical PE exit cycle.
- Company profile: Established, profitable businesses with ~$1.5M–$10M of EBITDA in non-regulated industries; add-on acquisition candidates of ~$5M–$50M in revenue.
- Sector lean: Industrial and precision metal manufacturing — enclosures, control buildings, engineered modular structures — serving utilities, telecom, data centers, wastewater, and government/military.
- Geography: Virginia and contiguous states for platforms, with flexibility for bolt-on deals elsewhere.
- What makes them say yes: Relationship fit and alignment first ("invest first in relationships and second in companies"), a suitable steward for family- or founder-owned businesses, and willingness to have management co-invest and stay on.
- Structure: Personal partner capital (family-office model), joint decisions between two partners, no outside LP pool and no formal investment committee.
Notable Investments
- Acoustical Sheetmetal Company (ASC) — Acquired January 2019; a leading U.S. manufacturer of environmental and sound-attenuating steel/aluminum enclosures for on-site power generation. Expanded with two new Virginia Beach (Innovation Park) facilities totaling ~235,000 sq. ft. (May 2021 and December 2023).
- Duravex (formerly Piedmont Metal Fabricators) — Precision metal fabrication and design company serving OEMs and industrial customers across North America, operating from a 65,000 sq. ft. facility on a 32-acre site in Louisa, VA. Acquired by RTK Family Capital, Young Capital Partners, and Jeff Coleman (now CEO).
- O'Sullivan Films — Winchester, VA manufacturer of high-performance polymer films (automotive, building, medical). Moore co-invested in a January 2006 management buyout from PolyOne Corporation; the business was later sold to Konrad Hornschuch AG of Germany (chosen over a higher cash offer for strategic fit).
- Richmond Electric Supply Company (RESCO) — Listed among RTK/Moore's investments (Moore held a shareholder role).
- Riddleberger Brothers, Inc.; Excel Homes; Addressograph — Additional past investments listed among RTK's portfolio/history.
