Background
Jeff Veen is a designer-turned-investor whose career tracks the arc of modern web design. He began at *Wired* / HotWired in the mid-1990s, where he was part of the team that shaped early web design conventions, and he authored two influential books, *HotWired Style* and *The Art and Science of Web Design*. In 2001 he co-founded Adaptive Path, the pioneering San Francisco user-experience consultancy. At Adaptive Path he led the development of Measure Map, a web analytics product that Google acquired in 2006; Veen then joined Google as a User Experience Director, where he designed Google Analytics and led UX for Google's apps.
In 2008 he co-founded and became CEO of Typekit (built inside his company Small Batch, Inc.), which solved web font licensing and delivery and became a standard tool for web typography. Adobe acquired Typekit in 2011, and Veen went on to serve as Adobe's Vice President of Products. True Ventures backed his companies early — leading a seed round in Small Batch and later Typekit's Series A — which formed the basis of his long relationship with the firm.
Veen subsequently joined True Ventures, where he spent roughly a decade as Design Partner and Head of Platform, building a platform team that supported a network of well over 1,000 founders across True's portfolio. He advised founders on product-market fit, scaling product and design teams, and more recently on navigating the shift to AI-driven development. As of his current listing on True's site, he serves as a Special Advisor to the firm. He is based in London.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through True Ventures at the seed and Series A stages, evaluating companies "through a design expert's lens."
- Gravitates toward design-led and product-first companies — developer tools, web infrastructure, publishing, and SaaS — reflecting his background at Adaptive Path, Google, and Typekit.
- Believes strongly that designers should start companies, and that great products come from strong product and design foundations.
- Frames fundraising as relationship-building, not transaction: *"Raising money for your startup is not about the money. It's about finding people to work with that you like and trust."*
- Values investors (and by extension founders) who bring networks, mentorship, and community rather than just capital: *"A great team costs money, and that hasn't changed – nor should it."*
