Background
Jeffrey Kanne leads National Real Estate Advisors and its subsidiaries, with responsibility for firm-wide strategy, operations, major transactions, new business development, and investor engagement. He reports to National's Board of Directors, serves on that board, and chairs both the Investment Committee and the Management Team.
Kanne has been involved with the platform since 2000, when he began guiding the evolution of the National Electrical Benefit Fund's real estate investment platform. National Real Estate Advisors began operations on January 1, 2010, after a spin-out of an internal NEBF division; senior real estate investment personnel transitioned from NEBF Real Estate, where the team had worked from 2000 through 2010.
He also serves as Vice Chairman of Sabey Data Centers, supporting strategic direction and long-term planning for the data center developer and operator. Earlier in his career, he served in the Peace Corps, worked as a lumber trader, practiced law in Washington, D.C., advised on multi-billion-dollar international debt restructurings and complex real estate transactions, and formed a private law practice focused on large-scale real estate development investments for institutional clients.
Kanne earned a B.A. in History and a J.D. with high honors from the University of Iowa. He is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia and Maryland and is a member of the Order of the Coif at the University of Iowa College of Law.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- National seeks to create "solid, long-term, risk-adjusted returns" through a rigorous investment process and development-led approach.
- The firm focuses on developing, operating, and managing commercial real estate and infrastructure projects across the United States.
- National's portfolios are concentrated primarily in multifamily, data centers, healthcare-related, and mixed-use facilities.
- The firm manages separate accounts and commingled investment vehicles for institutional investors.
- Kanne's role covers major transactions, new business development, investor engagement, and Investment Committee leadership, so opportunities should fit National's institutional real estate mandate rather than seed-stage startup investing.
- National's operating portfolio spans more than 18 million square feet, with $4.5 billion in assets under management and a $4.9 billion construction pipeline, according to a June 2026 firm release.
