Background
Jeffrey Paine is a native Singaporean and one of the most active early-stage investors in Southeast Asia. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Systems from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and later an MBA from the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School. He began his career in consulting (including a stint at KPMG) before spending roughly eight years in early-stage venture and private equity across the US, North Asia, and South Asia. Early in his path he co-founded a China market-entry advisory firm — later merged with a China mid-market private equity firm — and made his first investments through MPH Ventures.
In 2010, Paine launched the Singapore chapter of the Founder Institute, a startup accelerator/idea-stage program, which he ran through 2018 while overseeing its expansion across Southeast Asia, China, Australia, and Japan. The Singapore chapter graduated more than 100 companies, and in 2012 Paine received the Founder Institute Director Award for "Greatest Ecosystem Impact" worldwide. This ecosystem-building work established him as a well-connected node in the regional startup scene.
In 2011, Paine co-founded Golden Gate Ventures alongside Vinnie Lauria and Paul Bragiel. The Singapore-headquartered firm (73B Duxton Road) invests across Southeast Asia and has grown to more than US$300 million in assets under management, backing over 75 companies since 2012. Paine personally manages a portfolio of 20+ companies and has additional offices/presence across Vietnam, Indonesia, and beyond. He has also been associated with related initiatives including LuneX Ventures (a crypto/blockchain fund), the Edmund Hillary Fellowship, and Battle Ventures.
More recently, Paine has repositioned much of his public work around artificial intelligence — describing himself as "backing global AI founders & engineers," publishing a LinkedIn newsletter and long-form "build-in-public" essays at jeffreypaine.com on AI and venture capital, and using AI in his own investment-selection workflow. He has also championed founder mental wellness, launching an initiative ("Coachable") pairing founders with experienced coaches and mentors.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage & checks: Concentrates on the earliest institutional rounds — pre-seed through pre-Series A — with checks generally in the ~US$300K–US$2M range.
- Market first: He has stated that market size and speed to market are his top two criteria at the earliest stage — ahead of the team — using a benchmark of a company reaching ~US$100M ARR within about eight years of its first institutional round to gauge market potential.
- Founder psychology: Known for "founder-first" investing with blunt, challenging feedback; he pattern-matches on founder behavior and psychology, and has expressed a preference for scrappy, outsider, often first-time founders with a sharp, narrow focus over "copy-cat" founders.
- Ecosystem builder: Believes "successful companies are not formed in isolation" — emphasizing access to seed funding, mentorship, and networks.
- In his own words: "I like to challenge the minds of the founders and startup ecosystem leaders" — describing his style of speaking and mentoring as deliberately "engaging (blunt)."
- AI tilt (current): Increasingly focused on AI founders and engineers globally, and on applying AI/ML to the investment-selection process itself.
