Background
Jim Boone built a long career in personal wealth management and financial planning. He co-founded PPA Advisors in 1977, a wealth-management and investment-advisory firm based in Roswell, Georgia, and ran it for decades. Earlier in his career — after college and a period of active duty in the U.S. Air Force — he settled in Atlanta and entered the financial-services industry with Equitable (later AXA), where he spent roughly ten years working in estate planning and employee benefits before founding PPA Advisors. He has been a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) professional since 1984.
In September 2013, Boone joined SignatureFD as one of four new partners (alongside Philip Beatty, Dan Dubay, and Chuck Gray), bringing their PPA Advisors team and approximately $225 million in assets under management to the firm. At SignatureFD he specialized in working with medical and legal professionals, closely held corporate business owners, and retirees, and was known for serving partners at several of Atlanta's most established law firms. He has since retired from the firm (his LinkedIn and contact records list him as "Retired Partner at SignatureFD").
Boone holds a degree in Business Administration from Georgia Southern University. His stated professional philosophy is client- and planning-centric: *"My objective as a financial advisor is to enable our clients to develop and implement a family financial philosophy based upon their long-term goals and objectives."* He has described his approach as using modern wealth-management tools through a coordinated combination of investment advisory and comprehensive financial planning.
Outside of work, Boone is the father of three adult children and grandfather of four. He has been an active community volunteer, serving on the boards of Good News @ Noon, Young Life, and Adopt-A-Grandparent, and volunteering as a coordinator at the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta. He has participated multiple times in the Bike Ride Across Georgia and the Peachtree Road Race. More recently he returned to music and performs as a jazz saxophonist at venues around Atlanta, and he has worked on a book about characters from his upbringing in south Georgia. He and his wife, Ethel, reside in the Atlanta area.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- What he actually does: Personal wealth management and comprehensive financial planning for high-net-worth individuals and families — not company/startup investing.
- Client profile (the real "target"): Medical professionals, legal professionals (notably law-firm partners), closely held corporate business owners, and retirees.
- Approach: A coordinated model combining investment advisory with comprehensive financial planning; "using modern wealth management tools to help clients use their wealth to live a great life."
- Stated philosophy (his own words): *"My objective as a financial advisor is to enable our clients to develop and implement a family financial philosophy based upon their long-term goals and objectives."*
- No angel/seed thesis found: There is no public evidence of a startup investment thesis, check size, or sector focus for venture-style investing.
Notable Investments
- No startup or venture portfolio companies could be found for this individual. As a wealth-management advisor and CFP®, Jim Boone managed diversified client portfolios rather than making direct angel investments in companies.
- Most relevant "deal" on record: The 2013 lift-out in which Boone and three PPA Advisors partners brought their practice and ~$225M AUM to SignatureFD — a wealth-management firm transition, not a company investment.
