Background
Jody Forsyth co-founded Annapolis Capital in 2006 and serves as a Managing Partner, where he assists in the overall strategic management of the firm and its investment funds. He also acts as the firm's Chief Compliance Officer, overseeing back-office operations. Prior to Annapolis, Forsyth was part of the management teams of several start-up private oil and gas companies, where he focused primarily on structuring and managing equity financings, corporate sale transactions, and corporate governance matters — the same disciplines that now anchor his role at the firm.
Forsyth's academic background is unusually broad, blending technical, legal, and business training. He earned a B.Sc. in mathematics and a Diploma in Engineering in 1985, followed by an LL.B. and an M.B.A. in 1989, all from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 2008 he completed an LL.M. at Osgoode Hall Law School (York University, Toronto). His firm profile also notes affiliations with William & Mary, including involvement with its Center for Energy Law and Policy.
At Annapolis, Forsyth is one of the principals behind a firm that has raised roughly $730–750 million of capital since inception from North American institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals, with the principals and their families investing over $30 million of their own capital alongside limited partners. He also takes active governance roles in portfolio companies — for example, he has served on the board of Astara Energy Corp., a private, light-oil-focused junior producer in Alberta connected to the Annapolis team.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests exclusively in the Canadian upstream oil & gas sector, with emphasis on private, start-up and early-stage exploration & production companies (also select mature opportunities, via equity and debt).
- Stated mandate: to "generate above average risk-adjusted returns in the medium to long term" from Canadian oil and gas investments.
- Return discipline: considers only investments with visibility to a 2.5x–3.0x multiple over a 3–5 year horizon.
- Concentrated, hands-on strategy: commits larger investments to a limited number of companies and pursues board seats and positions of influence to manage risk — described as a "relatively conservative" approach.
- Leverages the team's operational, technical, financial, and leadership experience in running oil and gas companies to guide investment decisions and provide strategic input to management teams.
- Invests through a series of closed-end "Annapolis Energy Fund" vehicles (Funds V through VIII and predecessors), aggregating institutional and high-net-worth capital.
Notable Investments
- Astara Energy Corp. — Calgary-based private, light-oil-focused junior oil & gas producer operating primarily in Alberta; a co-founder/managing partner of Annapolis serves as its President & CEO, and Annapolis principals sit on its board.
- Amicus Petroleum Inc. — created in October 2020 through the combination of Tyrannex Energy Ltd. and Tempus Energy Ltd., both Annapolis-backed E&P companies.
- Forge Petroleum — disclosed private-equity investment of ~$5.07 million (August 2012).
- Overall, Annapolis states it has been "a major or significant investor in over forty-five private and public companies" across the Canadian oil and gas sector since 2006.
