Background

Joe Lonsdale (born 1982/1983) is an American entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and one of the most prolific company-builders in Silicon Valley's modern era. He graduated from Stanford University in 2004 with a degree in computer science. While at Stanford, he interned at PayPal, where he met his longtime mentor Peter Thiel. After graduating, he worked as an early executive at Clarium Capital, Thiel's macro hedge fund. In 2004, Lonsdale co-founded Palantir Technologies alongside Thiel, Alex Karp, Stephen Cohen, and Nathan Gettings, applying PayPal's fraud-detection data analytics techniques to national security and defense problems. He departed Palantir in 2009 but retained an advisory role and equity stake in the company, which went public in 2020 and trades on the NASDAQ under PLTR.

After leaving Palantir, Lonsdale embarked on a prolific streak of company creation. He co-founded Addepar (2009), a wealth management technology and data analytics platform, with Jason Mirra. In 2012, he and Zachary Bookman co-founded OpenGov, a cloud-based government budgeting and financial transparency platform (acquired by Cox Enterprises in 2024). He has co-founded or helped launch more than a dozen mission-driven companies, including Affinity (relationship intelligence CRM), Epirus (directed-energy defense technology), Resilience Bio (biomanufacturing), and Opto Investments (alternative investment platform). In 2011, he co-founded the venture firm Formation 8, and after its dissolution, launched 8VC in 2015 with 15 former Formation 8 employees.

Beyond investing, Lonsdale is deeply engaged in policy and education. In 2018, he and his wife Tayler founded the Cicero Institute, a public policy organization focused on effective and accountable government, which has helped pass over 175 bills across nearly 30 states. In 2021, he became the founding chairman of the University of Austin (UATX), a new institution dedicated to open inquiry and intellectual pluralism, which welcomed its inaugural class of 100 students in fall 2024. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and is an active Republican donor and political figure. Lonsdale relocated from San Francisco to Austin, Texas in 2020, bringing 8VC's headquarters along with him.

Investment Thesis & Focus

8VC's investment philosophy centers on identifying and building transformative technology platforms in industries with winner-take-all dynamics, particularly where software and deep tech can reshape critical sectors of the economy. The firm positions itself at the forefront of what Lonsdale calls an "American industrial renaissance," with a strong emphasis on national capability and hard-tech infrastructure.

Core focus areas include:

Distinctive approach: 8VC operates both as a venture capital fund and an internal venture studio through its "Build" program, dedicating 25-30% of capital to co-founding startups from the ground up. This builder-investor hybrid model reflects Lonsdale's own background as a serial founder.

  • Defense & National Security: Dual-use defense technology startups that strengthen Western security interests (e.g., Anduril, Epirus, drone technology)
  • Enterprise Software & AI: Next-generation platforms transforming how industries operate, with a strong conviction in AI-driven enterprise transformation
  • Life Sciences & Bio-Infrastructure: Biomanufacturing, longevity research, and the intersection of IT and life sciences (e.g., Resilience Bio, NewLimit, Guardant Health)
  • Hard Tech & Infrastructure: Autonomous construction, robotics, and physical infrastructure modernization (e.g., Gecko Robotics, Bedrock)
  • Fintech & Financial Services: Wealth management, alternative investments, and financial infrastructure (e.g., Addepar, Blend, NOAH)
