Background

John Babcock has been a partner at Rustic Canyon Partners since the firm's formation in 1999. Over his tenure he has backed entrepreneurs across the software, hardware, internet, and cleantech sectors, bringing more than 15 years of technology-industry experience to the firm and its portfolio companies. His investing interests have centered on clean technology, technology-enabled services and outsourcing, and advanced materials.

Before co-building Rustic Canyon, Babcock was an executive at the Los Angeles Times, where he worked across both the print and online businesses and served as general manager of the paper's online real estate operations. Earlier, he founded The Delta Group, a technology consulting firm. He began his professional career as a software programmer, giving him a hands-on technical foundation that informs his work with founders.

Babcock earned his B.A. from Duke University and his M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Outside of investing, he has served as a trustee of the Polytechnic School (and has been involved with the board of NOLS). An avid runner and mountain biker in the Santa Monica Mountains, he lives in Pasadena with his wife, Laura, and their two children.
