Background

John U. Clarke joined Turnbridge Capital, LLC as a Partner in its Houston office in May 2011 and today serves as a Partner and Senior Advisor, sitting on the firm's Investment Committee and advising portfolio-company management teams. Turnbridge, founded in 2008 with offices in Houston and Dallas, targets middle-market businesses that are directly or indirectly dependent on energy and energy-related infrastructure spending, and has increasingly emphasized companies enabling safe, reliable, low-cost and low-carbon energy and power. Clarke brings more than three decades of energy-industry leadership to the role.

Immediately before Turnbridge, Clarke was Chairman and CEO of NATCO Group, Inc., a publicly traded global oilfield-equipment manufacturer and services provider. He had served on NATCO's board as an independent director since February 2000, became Chairman in July 2004, and stepped into the CEO role that September, leading the company through to its sale to Cameron International in November 2009. Earlier, he was CEO of John Crane Inc. (1998–2000) after serving as its President–North America (1996–1998), and he ran Concept Capital Group, a Houston strategic- and financial-advisory firm.

The through-line of Clarke's career is senior financial leadership at large, publicly traded energy companies. Over roughly two decades beginning in the mid-1970s, he served as Chief Financial Officer or in other senior executive roles at Transco Energy Company, Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, Dynegy Inc., and The Houston Exploration Company. He earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Texas and an M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University.

Alongside his operating career, Clarke has been an active public-company director. He currently chairs the board of Thermon Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: THR), an industrial process-heating company, where he has been a director since July 2019 and non-executive Chairman since November 2023. His prior board seats include Harvest Natural Resources (2000–2008), The Houston Exploration Company (2003–2007), Penn Virginia Corporation, and Tesco Corporation (2011–2013).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Turnbridge in middle-market companies tied to energy and energy-infrastructure spending — services, products, and solutions for energy and power production and distribution.
  • Emphasis on building industry-leading companies that enable "safe, reliable, low-cost, and low-carbon" energy and power production and distribution — reflecting Turnbridge's stated positioning.
  • Structures are control-oriented private equity: buyouts, recapitalizations, and growth investments in established (not seed-stage) businesses, e.g., equity recapitalizations of Pipe Pros and the acquisition/recapitalization of Cimarron Energy.
  • Clarke's personal value-add is operating and financial-executive judgment — as a former energy CEO and repeat CFO, he serves as an advice-and-counsel resource to the Investment Committee and to portfolio management teams rather than as a hands-on deal sourcer.

Notable Investments

  • Cimarron Energy — Manufacturer of oil-and-gas production/processing equipment (separation, flowback, environmental products); acquired/recapitalized by Turnbridge from Curtiss-Wright in December 2014; later acquired Hy-Bon/EDI (2019).
  • Pipe Pros — Corpus Christi–based provider of casing and tubing installation services; equity recapitalization announced September 2013.
  • Jordan Technologies — Supplier of vapor-recovery units (VRUs) and the largest global VRU service provider; acquired by Turnbridge portfolio (Flare Industries) in September 2012.
