John Clunan

John Clunan joined Waypoint Advisors in the summer of 2014 as Chief Analyst, bringing over twenty years of experience as an analyst and information-technology executive. In that role he leads the firm's investment committee and oversees the evaluation and ongoing due-diligence of fund managers and other investment opportunities. Waypoint Advisors was founded in 2001 as an independent RIA in Virginia Beach, Virginia, serving high-net-worth individuals and foundations; in 2020 it was acquired by Richmond-based Cary Street Partners, a transaction that created a combined firm with roughly $4 billion in client assets (Waypoint contributed about $215 million in AUM).

Before Waypoint, Clunan spent his career in technology operations. Most recently he served as Chief Information Security Officer and Senior Director of Operations for SAP Mobile Services, where he led a 24/7 global operation that processed on the order of 1.8 billion transactions per day. Earlier, he founded a consulting company that was later sold to LogicaCMG, and he spent much of his career advising telecommunications and internet companies on technical and operational excellence. His profile also lists roles associated with Searchlight (Associates) and, more recently, the position of Chief Technologist at ULTRATA, LLC.

Clunan graduated from Brown University in 1988 with dual degrees in Business Economics and Computer Science. Raised in a family of diplomats and having worked for a large multinational corporation, he has lived overseas in England, Germany, Kuwait, the former Yugoslavia, and Thailand. He is based in the Virginia Beach area and holds a Series 65 (Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination) qualification as an investment adviser representative.

• Manager selection and due diligence, not direct startup bets. His documented mandate is to evaluate fund managers and investment opportunities on behalf of an RIA's high-net-worth and foundation clients — a screening/due-diligence discipline rather than early-stage venture check-writing.
• Technology-informed analysis. His deep operational background (SAP Mobile Services CISO/operations, a consulting firm sold to LogicaCMG, telecom/internet advisory) gives him particular fluency in evaluating technology, IT operations, and cybersecurity risk.
• Institutional, risk-managed lens. Working within a wealth-management RIA and its investment committee, the emphasis is on prudent, diversified, client-suitable investing (foundations and HNW households) rather than concentrated seed-stage speculation.
