John Donald

John Donald is a Toronto-based entrepreneur, private-equity backer and angel investor who currently serves as Chairman of Hazelton Partners Inc. He earned his MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario (studies completed 1961–1963), and has spent his career building and financing operating companies across self-storage, mortgage servicing and financial services.

In 1997 Donald co-founded All Canadian Self-Storage with partner Hal Spradling; the company grew into a multi-location Toronto-area operator and rebranded as XYZ Storage in 2018. He has remained one of the principal partners behind the business (alongside relatives/partners including Chris Donald and Leslie Kellen), and the group drew public attention in 2020 when it lent its facilities, trucks and logistics to the ConquerCOVID.ca effort to distribute PPE to healthcare workers.

Beyond storage, Donald has been a longtime figure in Canadian financial-services investing. He served as Chairman of Five Fathom Partners Inc., a privately held firm that provided seed capital, private equity, management, governance and advisory services to early-stage financial-services companies. Through Five Fathom he was a shareholder/backer alongside a notable group of Canadian financiers — including FirstService founder Jay Hennick, Brendan Calder, Yousry Bissada, David Chapman, Jake Orbach, Art Trojan, Chris Donald and Monitor Clipper Partners. He also sat as a Director of Paradigm Quest Inc., the mortgage-servicing (BPO) company backed by Five Fathom, and was connected to Canadian Storage Investment Trust.

Today, through Hazelton Partners Inc., Donald operates as a private investor and angel, applying decades of operating and financial-services experience to seed-stage opportunities.
