John Flavin

John Flavin is a Chicago-based life sciences entrepreneur, executive, and investor with more than 25 years of experience spanning finance, operations, and company creation. He holds a BS in Business Administration from Marquette University and an MBA from Lewis University. Early in his career he was Chief Operating Officer and a director at MediChem Life Sciences, a chemistry-based drug discovery company, where he also served as CEO of its protein engineering and proteomics subsidiaries. He then became President and Chief Financial Officer of Advanced Life Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company focused on infection, cancer, and respiratory diseases. He led both companies' capital financings — totaling over $220 million and including two NASDAQ IPOs.

Flavin has been a central figure in building Chicago's life sciences and entrepreneurship ecosystem. He helped stand up institutions including Chicago Innovation Mentors and MATTER, and served as Associate Vice President of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago, where he led the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and was named executive director of what was then the Chicago Innovation Exchange. He was also Chief Financial Officer of Endotronix, a medical device company.

In 2020, Flavin founded Portal Innovations, a venture development engine that builds, finances, and houses early-stage life sciences companies. Portal pairs seed capital with fully equipped wet/dry lab space and operational support, originally partnering with real estate developer Trammell Crow Company to open lab space in Chicago's Fulton Market. The firm has since expanded to Atlanta, Boston, and Houston, with a Salt Lake City incubator (Woodbine Labs) planned for 2027. Across his career, Flavin has raised more than $345 million (and by some firm accounts more than $425 million) of private and philanthropic capital, backing three NASDAQ IPOs.

Flavin operates in parallel through Flavin Ventures, a family venture incubator focused on starting, financing, and developing biotechnology companies, where he is Managing Director alongside family members including Michael T. Flavin. Flavin Ventures' lineage includes MediChem Life Sciences, Advanced Life Sciences, and Shamrock Structures.
