Background
John Fredriksen was born on 11 May 1944 in Eidsvoll, Norway, to a modest family, and took a commercial diploma via evening school while working. He entered shipping in 1961 as a messenger at the Oslo shipbroker Blehr & Tenvig, worked as a tank broker in Singapore in the late 1960s, and founded his first company, Northern Tankers Inc., in 1971. He made his early fortune trading oil out of Beirut and buying tankers in the 1970s, and famously profited by transporting crude at great risk during the 1980s Iran–Iraq War.
Over the following decades he built one of the world's largest privately controlled maritime empires. He has been the driving force behind Frontline plc (the world's largest oil-tanker owner, where he was Chairman, President and Director from November 1997 until stepping down in May 2021), and controls or holds major stakes in Golden Ocean (dry bulk), Flex LNG, Avance Gas (LPG), Seadrill (offshore drilling, which he founded in 2005), and Mowi, the world's largest salmon producer. These interests are held through private vehicles including Hemen Holding, Geveran Trading, Seatankers and World Shipholding.
Fredriksen renounced his Norwegian citizenship in 2006 and became a Cypriot citizen, largely for tax reasons. For years he was based in London at "The Old Rectory" in Chelsea, but he moved his operations to the UAE in 2025, publicly criticizing UK (and Norwegian) tax policy after the abolition of non-domiciled status. His wife, Inger Astrup Fredriksen, died in 2006; his twin daughters, Kathrine and Cecilie Astrup Fredriksen (born 1983), sit on the boards of group companies (Golar LNG, Frontline, Mowi) and are widely seen as his successors.
Forbes estimated his net worth at roughly $17 billion in 2025, ranking him among the ~120 richest people globally; Norway's Kapital has placed his fortune far higher. His personal investment philosophy is contrarian and cash-driven: he buys distressed, cyclical assets in downturns, avoids macro forecasting in favor of "gut feeling" on valuations, and prioritizes liquidity ("cash is king") and market timing over permanent control.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as a principal/holding owner, not a fund — deploys his own capital into large stakes rather than writing seed checks; this is a private empire, not a startup investor.
- Contrarian and cyclical: buys depressed, capital-intensive assets during downturns and rides shipping/energy cycles; leans on liquidity and timing rather than economic forecasting.
- Asset-heavy sectors: oil tankers, dry bulk, LNG/LPG carriers, offshore drilling, and salmon farming — businesses with real vessels/rigs/biomass and cyclical earnings.
- Stated approach emphasizes "cash is king" (June 2025 *Finansavisen* interview) and trusting "gut feeling" on when assets are cheap.
- Diversification beyond shipping: in 2020 Seatankers created a dedicated long-term investment unit (led by ex-ODIN fund manager Vegard Søraunet) to pursue "active ownership" in new areas, even opening it to outside investors because "there are many good opportunities we must let go" for lack of capital (Kathrine Fredriksen).
Notable Investments
- Frontline plc — world's largest listed oil-tanker owner; his flagship, ~36% stake via Hemen Holding.
- Golden Ocean Group — dry bulk shipping; sold his ~40.8% stake to CMB.TECH in March 2025 for ~$1.18 billion.
- Seadrill Ltd — offshore drilling contractor he founded in 2005; retained major ownership after its 2018 bankruptcy restructuring.
- Mowi (formerly Marine Harvest) — world's largest salmon producer; ~15% stake via Geveran, giving him a large share of global salmon/trout supply.
- Flex LNG — LNG carrier owner/operator.
- Avance Gas Holding — LPG carrier owner.
- Golar LNG — LNG infrastructure (his daughter Kathrine sits on the board).
- Arcadia Petroleum — oil trader acquired in 2006 (renamed Alta Trading, wound down 2022).
- Norwegian Property — Norwegian commercial real estate, held via Seatankers.
