Background

John G. Freund is a veteran life-sciences investor and entrepreneur who has been founding, financing, managing, and advising healthcare companies since 1982. He began his career as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley, where he co-founded the Healthcare Group in the Corporate Finance Department and later became the original healthcare partner at Morgan Stanley Venture Partners. He subsequently served as Executive Vice President of Acuson Corporation (a medical-imaging company later acquired by Siemens), running marketing and product introductions, and then spent roughly two years as the West Coast partner in the private equity group of Chancellor Capital Management (now part of Invesco).

In 1995 Freund licensed the SRI-developed robotic technology that became the core of Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG), co-founded the company, raised its initial venture capital, and served on its board until 2000. In October 1997 he founded Skyline Ventures with Eric M. Gordon, building a Palo Alto firm distinguished by the requirement that every investment professional hold an M.D. or Ph.D. Skyline raised roughly $800 million across multiple funds (its Skyline V fund held ~$350 million) and backed a long list of therapeutics, device, and diagnostics companies. He served as Managing Director of Skyline through about 2023.

Freund is also a hands-on operator: in 2016 he co-founded Arixa Pharmaceuticals and served as its CEO, developing ARX-1796 (an oral formulation of the β-lactamase inhibitor avibactam) until Pfizer acquired the company in 2020. Today he remains active largely through public-company board service and advisory roles rather than new fund investing.

Freund earned a B.A. in history from Harvard College, an M.D. from Harvard Medical School, and an M.B.A. (Baker Scholar) from Harvard Business School. Earlier in life he co-authored the 1982 New York Times bestseller *The Official MBA Handbook* and co-created the 1981 satirical poster "Bedtime for Brezhnev." He sits on the Harvard Business School Healthcare Initiative Advisory Board and the Harvard Medical School Therapeutics Advisory Council.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in product-focused healthcare companies: small-molecule and protein therapeutics, medical devices, diagnostics, and platform/enabling technologies for drug discovery and life-science research.
  • Concentrates on U.S.-based companies, typically leading or co-leading the first or second institutional round (early-stage, with some growth-stage follow-on).
  • Scientific diligence is the moat: Skyline's defining rule is that every investment professional holds an M.D. or Ph.D., enabling deep technical evaluation of the science before committing.
  • Values a clear path from technology to an approvable, differentiated product — Freund's own track record (Intuitive Surgical's robotics, Arixa's oral avibactam) reflects a preference for taking a validated technology and building a focused product company around it.
  • Comfortable taking board seats and active governance roles, frequently serving as chairman or lead director in portfolio companies.
