Background
John Geddes is a longtime Operating Partner of SCF Partners, the energy-focused private equity firm founded by L.E. Simmons and headquartered in Houston, with offices in Calgary, Singapore and Aberdeen. Geddes' relationship with SCF began when he was part of the management team at Wheatley TXT, one of SCF's earliest investments. In 1998 he joined as a Partner to establish SCF Partners, Inc. in Canada and to source investment opportunities in the then-rapidly-emerging Canadian oil and gas services market.
Over more than five decades in Canada's oil and gas industry — with a particular focus on the oilfield services sector — Geddes became one of the most prolific company-builders in the space. After launching SCF's Canadian operation in 1998, he oversaw processes that led to the birth and growth of more than 14 companies, seven of which were eventually taken public on major North American exchanges. His signature achievement was Flint, a services company assembled through roughly 35 acquisitions that grew to about $2.5 billion in annual revenues and 11,000 employees.
Geddes was born on a farm near Kindersley, Saskatchewan, and built a career that took him to some 60 countries. Outside SCF, he co-owns Zimco Instrumentation with his wife Lana and sons Michael and Paul. In August 2022 he was named the recipient of the Canadian Energy Executive Association's (CEEA) Lifetime Achievement Award — the third person to receive it, following energy leaders Allan Markin and Clay Riddell.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Builds and scales energy service and equipment companies through active company-building — coaching and mentoring management on strategic initiatives and growth plans rather than passive check-writing.
- Favors a buy-and-build / consolidation model (e.g., Flint's ~35 acquisitions) to create industry-leading platforms with enduring value.
- Focused on Canadian oilfield and energy services, with an emphasis on helping Canadian companies access global markets rather than depending on a single customer or geography.
- States his greatest satisfaction came from "helping young entrepreneurs… access to capital and opportunities," and emphasizes passion, hard work and ethical conduct — "not trying to win at all cost."
