John Grill

John Michael Grill AO is the founder and current Chair and Non-Executive Director of Worley Limited, the ASX-listed engineering and project-services company. Worley states that he was appointed to its board effective 1 March 2013 and serves as Chair of the Board and Chair of the Nominations Committee, with membership on the People and Remuneration Committee and the Health, Safety and Sustainability Committee.

Grill began his career with Esso Australia. In 1971, he became Chief Executive of Wholohan Grill and Partners, the specialist engineering practice that ultimately became Worley. The University of Sydney says he established Wholohan, Grill and Partners in 1971 as a specialised engineering practice in the oil and gas industry, and credits his leadership with helping Worley become a global enterprise in specialist design and project services across civil, structural, environmental, geotechnical, and coastal marine fields.

His education includes University of Sydney alumni credentials listed by the John Grill Institute as BSc (1966) and BE Civil (1968). He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Sydney in 2010 and another from the University of New South Wales in 2019. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2014 for distinguished service to engineering and business in the minerals, energy, and power-supply industries, and for support of advanced education and training.

Beyond Worley, Grill has chaired or supported project-leadership and health research initiatives. The University of Queensland profile lists him as Chairman of the Mindgardens Alliance and says that in 2012, through his foundation, he donated A$20 million to the University of Sydney to establish the John Grill Institute for Project Leadership.
