Background
John Helson is a co-founder and partner of J2 Partners, a lower middle-market private equity firm headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. At J2, he works in support of the firm's portfolio companies and is involved across the full arc of a deal — from sourcing and structuring through portfolio-company development and governance. He has served on the boards of Instrument Sales and Service (ISS), Fastback Networks, ARD Exploration, and Jackson Infrastructure Services, and is Chairman of the Board of the Genesee Group, a custom metal fabricator and stamper.
Before J2 Partners, Helson was a partner at Kachi Partners, another lower middle-market private equity firm. Earlier in his career, before entering the leveraged-buyout and financial-advisory business, he co-founded and served as Chief Executive Officer of Restream Inc., a provider of reverse-logistics and inventory-management services to the computer-hardware industry. He also spent roughly three years at UBS/PaineWebber as a broker managing retail and institutional accounts, and worked as an associate at Helson Associates, a middle-market leveraged-buyout firm.
Helson holds a BS from the University of California, Berkeley, an MS from the London School of Economics, and an MBA from Cornell University. Outside of work, he lists family, global travel, skiing and hiking in the mountains, and sailing among his interests.
In addition to his private-equity work, Helson is a member of the Santa Barbara Angel Alliance (SBAA), which is the basis for his classification as an angel / seed-stage investor. It is worth noting that his primary vehicle, J2 Partners, invests in established, profitable companies rather than early-stage startups, so the "Seed Round / Angel" label in the stub reflects his SBAA membership more than J2's core mandate.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Through J2 Partners, targets "control equity investments" in profitable, well-managed companies in stable niche markets or with competitive advantages in growth sectors, while staying flexible on capital structure.
- Company criteria (J2): $2M–$10M in operating cash flow or $10M–$50M in enterprise value; for buyout/recapitalization deals, generally >$5M EBITDA or >$25M in annual sales.
- Focuses on buyout, management-buyout, and recapitalization transactions — established businesses that are leaders in their markets with proven operational track records, not early-stage ventures.
- Sector emphasis: manufacturing, distribution, business services, and mature technology, plus exposure to aerospace, automotive, telecom, and consumer products.
- Positions J2 as more than a capital provider: "our principals and advisors have diverse operating backgrounds and experience," emphasizing strong management relationships and "objectivity and straightforward communications."
- As an SBAA member, participates in angel/seed-stage deals alongside the private-equity work.
