John Hyland

John W. Hyland Jr. was born January 29, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan. He majored in theoretical physics at Williams College, graduating in 1959, and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1961. He died on August 11, 2017, at age 79.

Hyland built a multi-decade career in investment banking. He spent roughly 18 years at Morgan Stanley & Co., where he became a partner after about eight years and eventually headed the firm's corporate finance division, expanding into its international operations. In October 1980 he joined A.G. Becker / Warburg Paribas Becker as Vice-Chairman of both entities and a director of the holding company, serving in a four-person senior management group (alongside Ira Wender, Jack Donahue, and Dan Good) and leading credit-securities and corporate-finance initiatives until the firm was acquired by Merrill Lynch in 1984. He subsequently held senior roles at PaineWebber (vice chairman, ~10 years, with involvement in Young & Rubicam Ventures) and at McFarland Dewey & Co.

In 2010 Hyland co-founded Media Advisory Partners (MAP), a boutique advisory firm serving small and mid-size marketing-services, media, and information companies with sell-side and buy-side M&A, debt and equity financing, and strategic consulting. (The firm's current public team page lists co-founder Mark Holdreith and others, but no longer lists Hyland, consistent with his 2017 death.)

Beyond finance, Hyland was a prolific author and a tireless patron of the arts and education. He wrote *Evangelism's First Modern Media Star: The Life of Reverend Bill Stidger* (2002), about his grandfather, and the Rome-set thriller *The Moses Virus* (2014). He served as Chairman (1982–1993) and later Chairman Emeritus of the American Academy in Rome (trustee from 1978), Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees of Teachers College, Columbia University, treasurer/director of the College Art Association for more than 30 years, Vice President and Director of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, and trustee/treasurer of the National Building Museum.
