Background
John Lambrech is the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Compliance Officer, and Administrative Officer of W Capital Partners, which he joined in 2011. He is responsible for all aspects of the firm's finance and accounting functions — including treasury management, GAAP and tax accounting, budgeting, fund administration, financial reporting, and limited-partner communications — as well as human resources. He also helped design and now oversees the firm's compliance program, the basis for his Chief Compliance Officer role. He brings roughly two decades of experience across the financial, operational, and administrative sides of the private equity and venture capital industries.
Before W Capital, Lambrech spent about 15 years at Canaan Partners, a roughly $3 billion global venture capital firm (Westport, CT), where he progressed through Analyst, Associate, and Director roles and finished his tenure as the firm's Director of Finance. Earlier in his career, he worked as a CPA at Ernst & Young in the Entrepreneurial Services Group, servicing financial-services firms and private-equity-backed companies.
He holds an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurship from New York University's Stern School of Business and a BS in Accounting and Economics from SUNY Oneonta.
W Capital Partners itself was founded in 2001 and is a leading provider of shareholder liquidity in direct private equity, offering minority recaps, GP-led continuation funds, and direct secondaries. The firm manages roughly $2 billion of capital and has completed 90+ transactions across more than 100 private-equity-backed companies. It now operates as part of BNP Paribas Asset Management.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Lambrech is a finance and compliance executive, not a deal-sourcing investment partner; the "thesis" below describes W Capital Partners, the firm whose books and compliance he runs.
- W Capital provides liquidity to existing shareholders of private companies — GPs, founders, institutions, and lenders — through direct secondaries rather than primary/seed funding.
- Typical structures: minority recaps, GP-led continuation vehicles, and direct secondary purchases of illiquid minority positions.
- Transaction size generally ranges from about $20M to $200M, targeting growth-equity and buyout-stage businesses.
- Sector emphasis on business services, health services, and enterprise/cloud software, primarily across the US and Europe.
- Firm positioning (from its own materials): "Developing the Direct Secondary Market" — the leading provider of shareholder liquidity in direct private equity since 2001.
