Background
John Polchin is a co-founder and Managing Director of Imagen Capital Partners, a Seattle-area venture firm he launched in late 2016 alongside Chris Barrow, the former President and CEO of EagleView Technology Corporation. The two set out to build a fund (reported at up to $150 million) focused on emerging software and hardware companies, applying the operating experience they gained scaling and exiting EagleView.
Before turning to investing, Polchin concluded a 25+ year career as an entrepreneur, board member, and CFO of both public and private companies. Most recently he was Chief Financial Officer of EagleView Technology Corporation, a geospatial and data-analytics company, where he helped drive substantial organic growth, completed several acquisitions, and led the company through its successful exit to a large private-equity firm. Across his career he has managed the completion of more than $3 billion in corporate financings and M&A transactions, with earlier executive roles spanning the information services, software, and financial-technology sectors.
Polchin holds a BA in economics from the University of North Carolina–Greensboro. In his investor capacity he takes active board roles, having served on the boards of Vioguard, BaseMap, ioCurrents, and Yembo, with prior directorships including Intelligence Insights and California Pacific Airlines.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage: Seed and early-stage, with a stated preference for being the lead investor on Series A rounds.
- Check size: Roughly $2M–$12M per company; the fund's debut investment was a $5M check into Vioguard.
- Business model: Prizes recurring-revenue, capital-efficient software. In Barrow's words describing the shared thesis, it is "really all about technology companies — mostly software companies, with a focus on the SaaS space, so highly recurring revenue, low capex kind of business."
- Sectors: SaaS/software, data analytics, and technology-enabled companies; will also back select hardware/technology plays (e.g., Vioguard's UV disinfection devices).
- Geography: Anchored in the Seattle area and Pacific Northwest, extending to other U.S. technology hubs.
- What earns a yes: Operator-led diligence — Polchin brings deep CFO/financial and M&A experience, so capital efficiency, clean unit economics, and a credible path to scale and exit are central. Imagen typically takes a board seat and works hands-on with portfolio companies.
Notable Investments
- Vioguard — UV-C automated disinfection hardware; Imagen's first investment (~$5M), where Polchin has served on the board.

- Emmersion (Emmersion Learning) — SaaS language-assessment / proficiency testing platform; cited as one of the firm's most notable holdings.
- JetClosing — Digital title and escrow / real-estate closing technology.
- BaseMap — GPS mapping and outdoor-recreation app; Polchin served on the board.
- Nimble and UV 360 — Additional portfolio companies listed among Imagen's ~10 holdings.
