Background
John White is a founding partner of Next Capital, an Australian private equity firm formed in 2005 after a spin-out from Macquarie Bank. Next Capital’s own materials identify White, Sandy Lockhart, and Patrick Elliott as former Macquarie private equity principals who established the firm after leaving Macquarie at the end of 2004.
At Next Capital, White has overseen acquisitions and ongoing management across several portfolio companies, including NZ Bus, Funlab, Vitaco, Noisette Bakeries, and Discovery Holiday Parks. The firm says he remains a non-executive director of some of those companies as well as the more recently acquired Jucy Rentals and TMX Consulting entities.
Before Next Capital, White worked in Deutsche Bank’s corporate finance group, including as Head of the Australasian Telecommunications and Media Advisory Group. Earlier, he worked at Ferrier Hodgson on corporate reconstruction and the management and sale of distressed assets in Australia and New York through affiliate Kahn Consulting.
White holds B.Comm and LLB degrees from UNSW, is a Fellow of Finsia, and is a past Chair of the AVCAL Council, now the Australian Investment Council.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Next Capital invests in established companies rather than startups. The firm says its focus is businesses with enterprise value of A$50 million to A$200 million.
- The firm’s stated approach is to partner closely with founders and management teams, describing itself as having a “people centric approach” and investing in “passionate people.”
- Sector selection is broad but disciplined: Next Capital looks for industries with above-GDP growth through cycles and companies with durable competitive advantages.
- The firm excludes real estate, early-stage financing, and natural resources.
- Geographic focus is Australia and New Zealand, with a preference for companies with established local roots and potential for expansion beyond those markets.
- Next Capital emphasizes active ownership: its senior team remains involved in strategy development and execution over the investment horizon.
