Background
Jon Callaghan is the co-founder and managing partner of True Ventures, a leading early-stage venture capital firm he established in 2005 alongside co-founder Phil Black. He has been active in venture capital since 1991, making him a veteran of over three decades in early-stage technology investing. Callaghan is also an entrepreneur in his own right, having built three companies of his own -- the first being Mountain Bike Outfitters, Inc., which he founded at age 18. That direct startup experience gives him an operator's perspective that informs his investor approach.
Before founding True Ventures, Callaghan built a deep and varied career across the venture landscape. He began as an associate at Summit Partners in Boston, then moved to Greenhouse, AOL's venture capital investment group and incubator. He entered the internet market early by joining CMGI's @Ventures group in 1996, positioning himself at the center of the first major wave of internet investing. He subsequently served as a managing director at Globespan Capital Partners before co-founding True. Under his leadership, True Ventures has partnered with over 1,050 founders across more than 500 companies, participated in seven IPOs and over 60 acquisitions, and was among the first institutional investors in now-iconic companies including Automattic (WordPress), Duo Security, Fitbit, HashiCorp, Peloton, and Ring.
Callaghan is also a prominent voice in the broader venture ecosystem. He served as Chair of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) from 2015 to 2016. Outside of work, he is an accomplished pilot, music enthusiast, and outdoor adventurer who spends time with his wife and four sons. On social media he describes himself as a "True guy, dad, pilot."
Investment Thesis & Focus
Callaghan's investment philosophy is deeply founder-first. He views entrepreneurs as his customers and believes True's foundational mission is to empower them at the earliest, most uncertain stages of company creation. He has noted that early-stage investing should feel "scary and lonely" with real ambiguity, and that success comes from backing teams you deeply believe in -- with results that only reveal themselves five to ten years later. True Ventures typically invests 5-10 years into the future rather than focusing on present conditions.
True Ventures is heavily focused on AI, having made over 85 AI-native investments since 2015. Callaghan believes the AI industry has entered "the application building phase" and that the application layer historically creates 5x to 10x the value relative to infrastructure capex investments. He has described the current period as "one of these magical times for entrepreneurship," driven by genuine technology innovation rather than cheap capital. Key sectors of interest include enterprise technology, consumer products, biology/biotech, robotics, and hardware interfaces.
Another distinctive thesis Callaghan holds is that the smartphone era is ending. He has stated: "We're not going to be using iPhones in 10 years. I kind of don't think we'll be using them in five years." True Ventures has been spending years exploring alternative interfaces -- the same instinct that led them to bet early on Fitbit, Peloton, and Ring.
