Background
Jon Fitzpatrick is a qualified corporate lawyer, petroleum economist and investment banker with more than 20 years in the energy industry. His career began in 1994 as a research associate at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee, an internationally recognised energy-law institution where he remains an Honorary Research Fellow and a mentor in the University's Leadership Plus Programme. He went on to build a track record executing major corporate finance transactions, equity issues and strategic financial advice globally, including a period at Cenkos Securities from 2011, where he worked alongside David Cooper (who later became Gneiss Energy's CEO).
In 2016 he founded Gneiss Energy, a specialist advisory firm assembling corporate-finance and industry professionals to operate across the full energy spectrum — oil & gas, cleantech & renewables, energy services & infrastructure and metals & mining. Under his leadership Gneiss advised some of the sector's most innovative clients on M&A, asset acquisitions and divestitures, and equity, mezzanine and debt capital raisings across multiple jurisdictions.
In June 2025, nearly a decade after establishing the firm, Fitzpatrick stepped into the role of Executive Chairman, with David Cooper — a Chartered Accountant with over 35 years in regulated financial services and Gneiss's former Head of Compliance/MLRO — appointed CEO. Fitzpatrick remains actively involved, particularly in deal-making.
Beyond Gneiss, he is a longstanding board member of the Scottish Energy Forum (member since 2008, President 2013–2015, and now Honorary Vice President), a Fellow of the Geological Society of London, and a member of professional bodies including the Law Society of Scotland, the ICAEW, the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment, the Association of International Energy Negotiators and the Worshipful Company of International Bankers. He is a regular public speaker and has published on European energy-market deregulation, UK energy infrastructure, tariffs and third-party access, and UKCS decommissioning. He is also a contemporary art collector, a mentor in the Robertson Trust programme, and a founding member of the Love Dougalston community green-space initiative.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Focuses on the energy and energy-transition value chain — cleantech & renewables, oil & gas, energy services & infrastructure, and metals & mining — reflecting his stated ambition to build "a leading energy advisory firm covering the whole energy spectrum."
- Works primarily through Gneiss Energy advisory mandates: raising seed, Series A and growth capital, and executing buy-side/sell-side M&A and A&D for energy companies.
- Backs digitisation of the energy and transition sectors — evidenced by repeat support for Xergy Group's Proteus software platform across multiple rounds.
- Values credible management teams and technology with a defensible role in the energy transition; the Proteus Series A+ was "priced at a 75% uplift from the prior fundraising," signalling the kind of demonstrable traction and value-creation he looks for.
- Global execution appetite, with transactions spanning the UK, Europe, North America, North Africa and Latin America.
