Background

Jonathan Kalman is a veteran early-stage venture capitalist with 25+ years focused on insurtech and fintech. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University (1985) and an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management (1997). Earlier in his career he served as a Managing Director at Safeguard Scientifics, the Pennsylvania-based operating-capital firm known for building and scaling technology and healthcare companies.

In 2016 Kalman founded Eos Venture Partners, a specialist insurtech investment firm created to bridge the "digital chasm" between InsurTech start-ups and traditional (re)insurance carriers. Eos backs early-stage companies across insurtech and fintech, typically writing checks in the $8M–$12M range at Series A and B. The firm has since grown a broad partnership and portfolio; Kalman's day-to-day operating role now sits alongside a wider Eos team of general and operating partners.

In parallel, Kalman runs Jaguar Capital Partners, his own early-stage vehicle that invests his personal capital and special-purpose vehicles (SPVs) into "the next wave of InsurTech leadership." Jaguar concentrates on high-priority themes including specialized underwriting, claims, climate, and longevity. Through these vehicles Kalman acts effectively as an angel and lead early-stage investor, often taking board or advisory roles at portfolio companies.

Beyond investing, Kalman is active in industry thought leadership: he has co-hosted seminar series on generative AI in insurance (with Mike Fitzgerald, sponsored by SAS), publishes "Insights" on his personal site, and has spoken at insurtech conferences such as CQCS Insurtech & Innovation. He has held board and governance-related roles connected to industry bodies including the RiskStream Collaborative (the insurance-industry blockchain consortium).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests almost exclusively in insurtech and adjacent fintech — companies that modernize underwriting, claims, distribution, and risk management for the (re)insurance value chain.
  • At Eos, targets Series A/B rounds with checks of roughly $8M–$12M; via Jaguar Capital, deploys personal capital and SPVs at seed / early stage.
  • Thematic priorities he has stated publicly: specialized underwriting, claims, cyber, climate, longevity/health & wellness, embedded insurance, and generative AI / advanced analytics.
  • Founding premise of Eos: close the "digital chasm" between insurtech startups and incumbent (re)insurers — i.e., he favors companies that can actually be adopted by carriers, not just disrupt them.
  • Jaguar's stated mission: "backing outstanding entrepreneurs creating the new world of insurance" and "targeting the next wave of InsurTech leadership through early-stage venture investing."
  • Tends to be a hands-on, carrier-savvy investor — often taking board seats and leaning on deep incumbent-industry relationships rather than a pure Silicon Valley playbook.
