Background

Jonathan T.M. Reckford has been Chief Executive Officer of Habitat for Humanity International since 2005, making him one of the longest-tenured leaders of a major U.S.-based nonprofit. A North Carolina native, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar and earned an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. As a recipient of a Henry Luce Scholarship, he did marketing work for the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee and coached the Korean rowing team ahead of the 1988 Olympic Games.

Before his nonprofit career, Reckford built a corporate résumé that began as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs and went on to include executive and managerial roles at Marriott, The Walt Disney Company, and Best Buy. He also served as executive pastor at Christ Presbyterian Church near Minneapolis before joining Habitat. He is a grandson of the late Millicent Fenwick, the New Jersey congresswoman and civil rights advocate, whom he credits as an early influence.

Under Reckford's leadership, Habitat for Humanity has expanded its annual reach from roughly 125,000 people to several million, operating in all 50 U.S. states and more than 60 countries; cumulatively the organization reports having helped tens of millions of people build or improve a place they can call home. In 2017 he was named the most influential nonprofit leader in America by *The NonProfit Times*, and in 2024 he received the Administrator of the Year Award from BYU's Romney Institute of Public Service and Ethics. He is the author of *Our Better Angels: Seven Simple Virtues That Will Change Your Life and the World.*

Rather than functioning as a private investor, Reckford's "deal" activity is largely through board service. In August 2021 he joined the board of directors of Data Axle (a data and marketing-technology company) as its first nonprofit-focused board appointment, representing its nonprofit division. He also serves or has served on the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, chairs Leadership 18, chairs the World Economic Forum's Real Estate Governors Community, chairs the Stanford Leadership Institute Advisory Board, and is a board member of Barron Collier Companies.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • No documented angel/venture thesis. No primary or secondary source identifies Reckford as making personal early-stage startup investments, and no check size, stage, sector, or geographic mandate for such activity could be verified.
  • Where his influence on capital allocation shows up publicly, it is through nonprofit and mission-driven housing work at Habitat and through corporate/nonprofit governance (board seats) rather than equity investing.
  • He is associated with the Faith Driven Investor / Faith Driven Entrepreneur community as a featured leader, signaling alignment with faith- and impact-oriented capital — but this reflects thought leadership and affiliation, not a personal fund or investing program.

Notable Investments

  • *No verifiable personal startup or seed-stage investments were found.* Reckford's documented company-level involvement is as a board director, not an investor:
  • Data Axle — joined the board of directors in August 2021 to help guide the data/marketing company's nonprofit-sector strategy.
  • Barron Collier Companies — board member of the privately held Florida land, agriculture, and real-estate firm.
  • Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta — board service in a public-institution governance capacity.
