Background

Jose Andino is the Director of Real Estate & Alternative Investments at Frind Properties Ltd., a Vancouver-based single-family office established in 2016 to steward the wealth and legacy of the Frind family. Frind Properties is the investment vehicle of Markus Frind, who built and sold the dating platform PlentyOfFish to Match Group in 2015. Andino has held the director role since October 2017 and is responsible for the origination, underwriting, diligence, and execution of the firm's real estate and alternative-investment activity across a diversified, roughly billion-dollar portfolio. His focus areas run from value-add and opportunistic real estate to infrastructure projects and venture capital managed on a portfolio basis.

Before joining Frind, Andino spent about a decade in corporate and investment banking, including roles connected to Citigroup and Scotiabank as well as South American regional banks. His functional expertise covers project finance, investments, M&A, and risk management, developed across the real estate, infrastructure, renewable-energy, and banking sectors. In the energy space he helped develop a portfolio of wind, solar, and thermal generation projects and was involved in the divestment of a ~1.5 GW portfolio to AltaGas — experience that underpins the firm's infrastructure and energy mandate today.

Andino began his career in Latin American banking and is a published author: in 2000 he wrote *"Market Structure, Performance and Solvency of the Banking Systems in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru."* He holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor's degree in Economics, and studied at the University of British Columbia's Sauder School of Business (2003–2004), where he served as president of the Finance Club and was active in the Entrepreneurship Club. He is a native English and Spanish speaker, with additional French and Portuguese.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Multi-asset family-office mandate: Frind allocates across real estate, public equities, venture capital, private equity, and other alternatives rather than running a single-strategy fund. Andino specifically owns the real estate and alternative-investment sleeves.
  • Real estate: Commercial, residential, and industrial assets pursued through value-add, opportunistic, and development strategies — including acquisitions, ground leases, opportunity-zone deals, recapitalizations, rehabilitation, and pre-development.
  • Venture capital: Portfolio-approach investing in revenue-generating SaaS businesses, with a stated emphasis on the strength and execution of the founding/management team.
  • Private equity: Lower-middle-market North American operating companies (roughly $10–30M enterprise value).
  • Alternatives & credit: Uncorrelated exposures such as litigation finance and blockchain, plus special-situations and credit opportunities backed by strong collateral.
  • Infrastructure & energy: Energy and economic-infrastructure projects, including public-private partnerships — an area drawing directly on Andino's renewable-energy background.

Notable Investments

  • RVezy — Peer-to-peer RV and motorhome rental marketplace; Frind participated in RVezy's ~$19M Series A (May 2021).
  • Ansan Traffic Group — Traffic-management services company; acquired November 2018 by a consortium including Frind (via Frind Enterprises) alongside CAI Capital Partners, BDC Capital, and Roynat Equity Partners.
  • Frind Estate Winery — Okanagan (BC) winery within the broader Frind group of companies, opened to the public in 2019 — an example of the family office's direct operating/real-asset ventures.
  • Renewable-energy portfolio (pre-Frind) — Development of wind, solar, and thermal projects, with a ~1.5 GW portfolio divested to AltaGas.
