Background

Joseph Baratta grew up in the Sacramento, California area, graduating from Jesuit High School in 1989 and from Georgetown University *magna cum laude* in 1993. Before entering private equity, he worked in the mergers and acquisitions department at Morgan Stanley, and then at the investment firms McCown De Leeuw & Company and Tinicum Incorporated.

Baratta joined Blackstone in 1998. In 2001 he moved to London to establish and build the firm's private equity business in Europe — a formative chapter that gives him an unusually global perspective among U.S. buyout leaders. He was named a Senior Managing Director in 2004 and Head of European Private Equity in 2010. In July 2012 he was named Global Head of Private Equity, succeeding the firm's prior generation of buyout leadership.

In January 2025, Blackstone elevated Baratta to oversee its private equity strategies worldwide (the firm manages roughly $1.1 trillion in total assets), with Martin Brand stepping up to lead the flagship corporate private equity fund. Baratta is a member of Blackstone's Board of Directors, its Management Committee, and many of its investment committees. He has reportedly become a billionaire through his ownership stake in the firm. He sits or has sat on the boards (or as an observer) of portfolio and other companies including Medline, Merlin Entertainments, Ancestry, Candle Media, and First Eagle Investment Management.

Beyond Blackstone, Baratta is active in education and philanthropy. He serves on the Board of Directors and the endowment investment committee of Georgetown University (his alma mater, where the Baratta Center for Global Business Education bears his name), and is a trustee of the Tate Foundation, a board member of Year Up, and has been involved with Trinity School in New York City. He was named to Forbes' "Top 50 Dealmakers" list in 2012.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates at institutional buyout scale — control investments, take-privates, carve-outs, and growth equity in large, established companies — not seed/angel investing.
  • States the firm's core approach is "backing companies in sectors with secular tailwinds" and "driving operational improvements" to create value rather than relying on financial engineering or cheap leverage.
  • Has emphasized investing through cycles, noting the challenge of "the end of easy monetary policy and near-term growth headwinds" and the need for disciplined, fundamentally strong sector selection.
  • In 2025 commentary, has pointed to energy and power infrastructure "fueling the AI revolution" as a major thematic opportunity, alongside Blackstone's broader thematic, high-conviction investing style.
  • Favors scaled platforms and market leaders where Blackstone's operational resources, capital, and global network can compound value.

Notable Investments

  • Medline Industries — Blackstone-led consortium's ~$30B+ recapitalization (2021), one of the largest LBOs of the era; Baratta serves on the board.
  • Merlin Entertainments — operator of Legoland, Madame Tussauds and SEA LIFE; taken private in a ~$6B+ deal (2019); Baratta serves on the board.
  • Ancestry — DNA and family-history platform acquired by Blackstone for ~$4.7B (2020); Baratta is a board member/observer.
  • Candle Media — Blackstone-backed media company founded by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs; Baratta is associated with the board.
  • First Eagle Investment Management — asset manager in which Blackstone holds a stake; Baratta sits on/observes the board.
  • Blackstone's European PE platform broadly — the business Baratta founded in 2001, underpinning many of the firm's later cross-border buyouts.
