Background

Joseph Miron is Chief Legal Officer and a Managing Director at Equity Group Investments (EGI), the Chicago-based private investment firm founded more than 50 years ago by the late Sam Zell. In this role he oversees all of EGI's legal activities, working alongside the investment team and outside counsel on transactions, and historically advising the Zell family and the Zell Family Foundation on corporate, governance, transactional, and philanthropic matters. He also serves on both the governance committee and the investment committee of the Chai Trust Company Board of Directors, the Zell family's private trust company.

Miron joined EGI in 2017 from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he worked in the corporate practice group. His experience spans mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructurings, joint ventures, and securities and corporate finance — across industries and across Fortune 50, middle-market, and emerging companies. Earlier in his career he was a manager in the consulting division of Arthur Andersen and worked in the legal and regulatory division of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, giving him an unusually broad blend of legal, financial, and regulatory experience.

He holds a JD (summa cum laude) from Chicago-Kent College of Law, an MBA with distinction in finance from DePaul University, and a BA in finance from Michigan State University. He is a Certified Public Accountant (inactive status). Outside his firm work, Miron is a long-standing volunteer and advisor to the Chicago Lawyers' Committee and the Community Law Project.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • As part of EGI, Miron sits inside a firm that describes itself as "flexible and opportunistic," backed by private capital, and focused on direct private investment opportunities with the in-house expertise to invest across the capital structure.
  • EGI is a long-term investor that "actively partners with portfolio company executives to execute strategic planning, implement operational efficiencies, and scale businesses" — its pitch is being "more than just capital."
  • Target situations are established, cash-generating businesses — not early-stage startups — often in complex or out-of-favor situations where the firm's operating and structuring expertise creates value.
  • Sector appetite is broad: healthcare, transportation & logistics, infrastructure, energy, consumer, industrial/manufacturing, agri-business, and real estate.
  • Miron's own value-add is transactional and legal: M&A, restructurings, joint ventures, governance, and securities/corporate finance — he is a deal executive and gatekeeper, not a check-writing angel.
