Background

Joseph Stein is a Partner and the Head of Financing Advisory at Solomon Partners, the New York–based boutique investment bank founded as Peter J. Solomon Company (the firm's legacy domain, pjsc.com, still routes to the current solomonpartners.com). In that role he advises clients on financing transactions, including the placement of loans and securities with both banks and direct (non-bank) lenders. He joined the firm in 2001 and, per the firm's own bio, has arranged more than $20 billion of debt and equity capital for acquisitions, general corporate purposes, and highly structured rescue/special-situations financing.

Stein has more than 20 years of investment-banking experience. He began his career at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company in asset-based finance and later held corporate finance positions at Citicorp Securities. Before Solomon Partners, he was an Executive Director and head of the Private Placement Group at UBS Warburg LLC, where he was responsible for structuring and placing senior debt, subordinated debt, and mezzanine securities for domestic and foreign issuers.

He earned an MBA from the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Rochester and a BA from Hobart College, where he has also served as a trustee of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He is registered with FINRA (BrokerCheck) as a broker representative at Solomon Partners.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates as an independent placement agent / financing advisor, not a principal investor: "We don't have our own capital like a bank, so we are not beholden to our own solution."
  • Frames the job as sourcing capital in the client's interest: "Our job is to seek out the most competitive financing that meets our clients' objectives."
  • Targets borrowers with "reliable cash flow" and "competitive and defensible" market positions; particularly favors recurring-revenue models (software, data analytics) for their cash-flow visibility, which he says makes them attractive to direct lenders.
  • Covers the full financing toolkit: senior debt, subordinated debt, mezzanine, and equity placements — for acquisitions, refinancings, recapitalizations, and rescue/special-situations mandates.
  • As of Q1 2024 he described favorable conditions across both private-credit and leveraged-loan markets, expecting continued client access to capital.

Notable Investments

  • No public portfolio of angel/venture investments is attributable to this Joseph Stein; his work is advisory (arranging financing for clients) rather than making principal investments, so named startup deals are not disclosed in available sources.
  • Cumulatively credited with arranging $20 billion+ in debt and equity capital placements since 2001 (firm bio) — deal-level counterparties are generally confidential private placements.
