Background

Joseph Walla is best known as the co-founder and CEO of HelloSign, the electronic-signature and paperless-office company. He started the business in 2010 as HelloFax alongside co-founder and CTO Neal O'Mara, going through Y Combinator in the Winter 2011 (W11) batch. HelloFax began as a way to send and receive faxes online, then added document editing and signing; that signing product was spun out as HelloSign in 2012, focused on giving businesses the easiest way to sign legally binding documents online.

Under Walla's leadership, HelloSign grew to millions of users and tens of thousands of paying customers before being acquired by Dropbox. Dropbox announced the deal on January 28, 2019 for approximately $230 million — at the time Dropbox's largest acquisition — and completed it in February 2019. Walla stayed on to run HelloSign as a Dropbox company (later rebranded Dropbox Sign), reporting into Dropbox's product and engineering leadership.

Walla studied at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he earned a BA in Political Science and was recognized with the Truman and Luce scholarships. He came to startups from a background in public policy and product management, an influence still visible in his writing, where he takes a strong interest in policy questions such as housing and the YIMBY ("Yes In My Backyard") movement.

Today Walla writes a blog called "startup thoughts" at josephwalla.com, where he shares operating advice for founders — on scaling teams from 10 to 20+ people, organizational structure, revenue and profitability, fundraising, and managing founder stress — and he angel-invests personally in early-stage companies.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests personal capital as an angel at the seed stage, drawing on his own experience building a SaaS company from YC through a nine-figure exit.
  • Portfolio leans toward B2B SaaS/productivity tools and real estate & construction technology — reflecting both his HelloSign operating background and a stated interest in housing and the built environment.
  • Public writing emphasizes operational discipline: raising enough capital, getting to profitability, protecting runway, clear org structure and role clarity as teams scale, and revenue generation over vanity growth.
  • Strong personal conviction around the housing crisis and YIMBY policy ("your vote truly matters"), which aligns with construction/proptech bets like Pirros.
  • A low-volume, selective angel (a small handful of disclosed deals) rather than a high-frequency check-writer — signaling he backs companies he can engage with directly.

Notable Investments

  • Pirros — Detail-management platform for architects and engineers (AE firms); Walla participated in Pirros's seed round (August 2023) alongside former Autodesk CEO Carl Bass and PlanGrid co-founder Ryan Sutton-Gee. Pirros (a Y Combinator company) later raised a $15M Series A.
