Josh Abramowitz

Josh Abramowitz is a fintech entrepreneur, angel investor, and hedge fund veteran based in New York. He co-founded Bread in 2014, a fintech company that partnered with retailers to offer transparent, white-label pay-over-time financing solutions. As CEO, he grew Bread to over 400 retail clients and 185 employees, raising a $14.3M Series A led by Bessemer Venture Partners (2015), a $126M Series B led by Menlo Ventures (2017), and a $60M Series C led by Kinnevik (2018), with additional backing from RRE Ventures, Colle Capital Partners, and Cue Ball. Bread was acquired by Alliance Data Systems in December 2020 for $450 million, and its technology platform was subsequently licensed to Royal Bank of Canada (RBC).

Before founding Bread, Abramowitz built a distinguished career in institutional finance. He worked as a Portfolio Manager at Viking Global Investors, one of the world's premier hedge funds, and prior to that served as an Investment Analyst at Elliott Management Corporation, the influential activist hedge fund. He began his career as an Associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, the elite Wall Street law firm, and also co-founded and served as President of LearningAction, Inc. Earlier in his career, he worked as Managing Editor and Research Assistant at The American Enterprise Institute / The Public Interest.

Abramowitz earned his JD from Yale Law School in 1997 and a BA in History from Colgate University in 1991. He currently serves as a Visiting Lecturer at Yale Law School, where he teaches a course called "Hedge Funds and the Law," designed to prepare students to engage with hedge funds and alternative investment funds from the perspectives of clients, regulators, policy makers, and employees. He is also the Chairman and Managing Partner of Deep Creek Capital LLC, his personal investment vehicle, and serves as an Advisor at Colle Capital Partners.

Abramowitz invests through Deep Creek Capital LLC, a private firm that invests in a broad variety of assets and securities, including angel investments in private companies, corporate credit, and distressed debt. His angel investing is concentrated in areas where technology intersects with financial services -- a theme deeply informed by his dual background as a hedge fund professional and fintech founder. He has a particular interest in consumer finance, specialized finance, payments, and banking technology. He primarily invests at the seed stage, bringing operational expertise and financial industry networks to early-stage founders.
