Background

Joshua Kahn is a private-markets dealmaker with roughly two decades of experience across private equity, investment banking, strategy consulting and M&A, spanning the United States, Europe, India, the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia. Originally from New York City, he has held increasingly senior roles across Singapore, Southeast Asia, New York and Chicago, and holds an MBA from Columbia Business School (Columbia University).

Earlier in his career Kahn worked at Hamilton Lane, where he was a director on the firm's Asia team based in Hong Kong, and served as Director of Investor Relations at Loeb Holding AG. He departed Hamilton Lane in 2014 (reported by Private Equity International as the firm "localised" its Asia team) and founded an advisory entity called "Old Peak," which was ultimately absorbed into Ion Pacific.

At Ion Pacific — a Hong Kong-based merchant-banking and venture secondaries platform (~US$700m AUM) — Kahn spent roughly a decade as Head of Funds Advisory and a Managing Director. There he led the firm's GP-advisory business, focused on liquidity solutions, transaction sourcing, fund-less capital raising, and strategic consulting for GPs building their businesses. Ion Pacific is a recognized early mover in structured VC secondaries, with funds such as its Stonecutter series.

In 2025 Kahn co-founded New Peak Partners, a Hong Kong-headquartered private-markets advisory firm (SFC-licensed for Type 1 & 4 activities), alongside co-managing partner Niklas Amundsson (former head of Monument Group's Asia business) and partners Catherine Mooney (ex-Asante Capital) and Albert Jun. The firm — whose name nods to his earlier "Old Peak" venture — launched with six professionals and was built to combine Kahn's advisory skill set with the fundraising capabilities of Monument's former Asia team. New Peak Partners was named "Placement Agent of the Year in Asia-Pacific" at the 2024 PEI Awards.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates as a full-service "placement agent-plus" platform for Asia-Pacific private markets — not a pure fund-raiser. In his words: *"We are not building a business purely to raise Asia-focused funds. We are looking to work with those GPs across a variety of disciplines."*
  • Core service lines: fundraising/capital formation, liquidity solutions, transaction (secondaries) solutions, and strategic consulting for GPs.
  • Two-way mandate: help Asia-based GPs access North American, European and Middle Eastern LPs, and help international GPs tap Asia-Pacific's growing investor base.
  • At Ion Pacific, championed structured VC secondaries — roughly four of every five deals under that strategy were structured transactions — and continuation vehicles as a way to deliver liquidity in venture portfolios.
  • Emphasis on GP business-building know-how: sourcing deals, providing liquidity to early shareholders, and fund-less capital raising, rather than passive minority-stage investing.

Notable Investments

  • Carro — Southeast Asian used-car marketplace; Ion Pacific provided liquidity to early angel shareholders. Later raised a $360m Series C co-led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 and reached >$1bn valuation.
  • Nutmeg — UK robo-advisor accessed via a Singapore relationship; acquired by J.P. Morgan (one of 6+ exits from Ion Pacific's Fund I).
  • Traveazy — travel/ticketing platform; Asia-based holding.
  • Singlife — insurtech; noted portfolio exit (Nov 30, 2020).
  • Catalia Health — healthcare technology company.
  • Ion Pacific funds: Stonecutter III (closed ~US$195m; ~60% US, remainder Europe/Southeast Asia); a 2021 healthcare/med-tech/life-sciences secondaries fund; a 2022 Southeast Asia–only VC secondaries fund; and a prior fund that closed at ~US$133.6m.
