Background

Joshua Spoerri is a Managing Director at OpCapita LLP, the London-based private equity firm founded in 2006 by American financier Henry Jackson to invest in underperforming retail, consumer and leisure businesses across Europe. Spoerri joined the firm at its founding in November 2006. At OpCapita he is responsible for transaction execution, has oversight of operational-improvement initiatives across the portfolio, and sits on the firm's Investment Committee.

Before OpCapita, Spoerri spent more than a decade at BA Capital Partners, where in 1995 he helped establish Bank of America's European private equity business. As part of that team he participated in 39 investments across 10 countries in Western and Emerging Europe. Earlier in his career he worked at Continental Bank, building corporate-finance and capital-markets experience through the underwriting and syndication of debt into the public, private and bank markets. He holds a BA in Political Science from Denison University (Ohio).

In line with OpCapita's hands-on, operationally intensive model, Spoerri has served as a Non-Executive Director on the boards of several portfolio companies, including La Sirena (Spanish frozen-food retailer), Rossopomodoro (Italian pizza-restaurant chain, part of the Sebeto group) and Merkal (Spanish footwear retailer). UK Companies House records list him under the name Joshua Charles Spoerri with multiple director appointments tied to OpCapita entities.

It is worth noting for context that, according to reporting in early 2026, founder Henry Jackson announced plans to relocate to the US and transition portfolio-monitoring duties, and by around March 2026 the firm was reported to be in the process of winding down after roughly 20 years — so OpCapita's active new-investment activity should be verified before any outreach.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in retail, consumer and leisure companies that are "strategically sound but operationally or financially challenged" — the value creation comes from operational turnaround, not growth-stage financing.
  • Control-oriented buyouts / special situations, typically in the ~€100–500 million range, not seed or angel checks.
  • Sector concentration in consumer-facing businesses: apparel and footwear, general retail, food & beverage and restaurants, frozen/grocery, and household/lifestyle goods.
  • Geographic base in Western Europe (UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy), with a repeated pattern of building positions in a single country (e.g., three Spanish deals: Game Spain, La Sirena, Merkal).
  • Spoerri's personal remit — transaction execution plus operational improvement and board oversight — reflects the firm's thesis that returns are driven by fixing operations and taking active board roles rather than by financial engineering alone.

Notable Investments

  • Game (Game Group) — UK video-games retailer; acquired 2012, floated/relisted in 2014 at a market value in excess of £600m, reportedly many times OpCapita's cost.
  • BUT — French homeware/furniture chain; exited in 2016 for an estimated ~€525m.
  • Comet — UK electricals retailer; acquired 2011, entered administration in 2012 (a notable loss in the portfolio).
  • La Sirena — Spanish frozen-food retailer; acquired 2014 (OpCapita injected ~€4.7m and took board seats), later sold around 2021. Spoerri served as Non-Executive Director.
  • Rossopomodoro / Sebeto — Italian restaurant group and pizza chain; acquired 2018 (OpCapita's first Italian deal). Spoerri was named as one of OpCapita's board representatives / Non-Executive Director.
  • Merkal (Merkal Calzados) — Spanish affordable-footwear retailer (~215 stores); carved out/acquired, OpCapita's third Spanish investment. Spoerri served as Non-Executive Director.
  • NKD Group — German textile/discount retailer; sold to TDR Capital in 2019.
