Background
Juan Carlos Domenzain Arizmendi is a Mexican entrepreneur and impact-investing pioneer who co-founded Promotora Social México (PSM) in 2009 and led it for more than 15 years as its President / Director General (CEO). PSM was one of the first organizations in Mexico to practice "venture philanthropy" — deploying capital and structured debt into for-profit social enterprises rather than pursuing traditional charity. Under his leadership PSM built a portfolio spanning health, education, and economic-development companies serving under-served communities, and grew into a recognized node of Mexico's impact-investing ecosystem. He has more recently transitioned from CEO to Vice President of PSM's Board of Directors.
Domenzain holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Universidad Anáhuac and describes himself as a lifelong entrepreneur and businessman. He has said his interest in social responsibility traces back to watching his mother help many people while raising seven children, and earlier in his career he co-founded a youth social project ("Gente Nueva"). He moved into impact investing after concluding that Mexico's social sectors lacked capital and commercially oriented deal flow.
His guiding philosophy separates financial return from mission: "For us, earning money is one consequence of doing things well; what matters is whether we're truly changing lives and helping build a better world." PSM's operating model identifies high-impact entrepreneurs through national and international forums, runs rigorous due diligence, and then provides hands-on strategic support in the areas where founders are weakest. As of recent reporting, PSM had made roughly 27 direct company investments plus ~9–10 fund commitments, with a team of around 19 and portfolio companies employing 300+ people.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Commercial solutions to social problems — Domenzain's core screen: "Buscamos soluciones comerciales para resolver problemas sociales" ("We seek commercial solutions to resolve social problems"). Deals must generate both social and economic returns.
- Base-of-the-pyramid impact — invests in companies delivering products/services in education, health, and economic development to low-income Mexicans and Latin Americans.
- Stage & check size — the IVPSM Seed Fund (built with Impacta VC) writes ~US$100K–US$300K tickets into pre-seed/seed startups with early validation; the LATAM Fund targets Series A and later.
- What makes him say yes — disruptive, scalable, and sustainable models led by high-caliber entrepreneurs, surfaced via forums and vetted through rigorous due diligence.
- What he sees as missing — he has publicly lamented "limited innovation… a lack of impact projects in education, water, agriculture… and fear of failure," signaling appetite for founders tackling exactly those gaps.
- Multi-vehicle approach — PSM invests both directly (equity and structured debt) and as a fund-of-funds/LP across Latin America.
