Background

Judith Charpentier is a Co-Managing Partner of Astorg, one of Europe's largest independent private equity firms, managing over €23 billion in assets. She joined the firm in 2009 and, in May 2025, was elevated to Co-Managing Partner alongside Benjamin Cordonnier (who became CEO), jointly leading the firm's day-to-day operations as part of a succession plan under Executive Chairman and co-founder Thierry Timsit. In addition to the top leadership role, she serves as Co-Head of Astorg's Flagship Fund and Head of Healthcare, and sits on both the firm's Investment and Executive Committees.

Charpentier's defining contribution has been building Astorg's healthcare franchise. She founded the firm's dedicated Healthcare practice in 2016 and grew it into Astorg's single largest investment area, with more than €6.5 billion deployed across the sector. Several of the marquee deals — spanning pharma services, clinical-trial technology, and medical diagnostics — were directly sourced and led by her.

Before Astorg, she began her career in 2005 in the Mergers & Acquisitions division of Morgan Stanley in Paris, later moving to the bank's Media & Telecommunications team in New York, accumulating roughly three years in investment banking across Europe and the U.S. She then spent about a year as an Associate at Fondations Capital, a Paris-based private equity fund, before joining Astorg.

Academically, Charpentier is a graduate of ESSEC Business School and holds a Master's in Political Science from Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne. She is based in Astorg's Paris headquarters.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through control buyouts of established, profitable European businesses — not startups; the "Angel / Seed" label in the source stub is inaccurate for her.
  • Deep healthcare and life-sciences specialization: pharma/CDMO, clinical-trial technology, diagnostics, and specialty pharma are her core hunting ground.
  • Backs market-leading "niche champions" with defensible positions and international (often transatlantic) growth runway, consistent with Astorg's stated approach of "uncovering value through the art of listening."
  • Pursues a buy-and-build / platform strategy, scaling category leaders via M&A and geographic expansion (e.g., building Clario and CordenPharma into global platforms).
  • On leadership succession she framed her mandate as continuity and scale: *"I am fully committed to working alongside Benjamin and the broader team to lead Astorg through its next stage of growth."*

Notable Investments

  • Clario — Global provider of endpoint data and technology solutions for clinical trials; an Astorg healthcare platform.
  • CordenPharma — Leading CDMO (contract development & manufacturing) focused on complex niche drug modalities, from early-stage development to commercial-scale manufacturing.
  • Echosens — Diagnostic company making non-invasive medical devices for chronic liver disease; Astorg acquired Cathay Capital and OrbiMed's stakes to build its position.
  • HRA Pharma — Specialty pharmaceutical company (consumer health / prescription).
  • Cytel — Provider of statistical software and analytics for clinical trials.
  • OPEN Health — Healthcare consultancy and medical communications group.
  • Nexpring — Healthcare-sector holding within the Astorg portfolio.
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific microbiology business — Astorg agreed to acquire this global microbiology unit as a carve-out, extending the healthcare platform strategy.
