Julian Kirk

Julian P. Kirk has been with Third Security, LLC since the firm's inception in 1999 and was appointed Chief Executive Officer in November 2020, succeeding to day-to-day leadership of the firm founded by Randal J. Kirk (the firm's Executive Chairman and founder). For most of his tenure he held the title of Managing Director, working closely with the portfolio companies of Third Security's managed investment funds and overseeing the firm's internal operations. He graduated as an Echols Scholar from the University of Virginia.

Third Security was launched by attorney and entrepreneur R.J. Kirk following the 1998 sale of General Injectables & Vaccines, Inc. to Henry Schein for roughly $65 million. The firm invests almost exclusively in the health-care/life-sciences sector and has been associated with a series of well-known biotech ventures, including Intrexon (later Precigen/DNA.com), Halozyme Therapeutics, Clinical Data, New River Pharmaceuticals, Ziopharm Oncology, Synthetic Biologics, and Fibrocell Science.

Julian Kirk's operating and board experience is concentrated in these life-sciences companies. He served as President of Harvest Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (2005–2011) and as Co-Chairman of IntelliMat, Inc. (2008–2011). He joined the board of Fibrocell Science, Inc. in October 2012 (as part of a $45 million private placement alongside a strategic collaboration with Intrexon) and served until Fibrocell's acquisition by Castle Creek Pharmaceuticals in December 2019. He also joined the board of AmpliPhi Biosciences Corporation (now Armata Pharmaceuticals) in June 2013, serving into 2016.

In its current form, Third Security describes itself as "a manager of a portfolio of operating biotechnology companies, as well as a family office," working with portfolio companies to "drive innovation, growth, and the use of biology to solve problems throughout the globe." As CEO, Julian Kirk oversees this operating-company management model rather than a traditional venture placement strategy.
