Background

José del Barrio is a founding partner of Samaipata, a pan-European early-stage venture capital firm he co-founded in 2016 with Eduardo Díez-Hochleitner. Before becoming an investor, he was an operator: he co-founded La Nevera Roja, which became one of Spain's leading online food-delivery platforms. The company was sold to Rocket Internet in 2015 for roughly €85.9m (~$100m), an outcome that established him as one of the more prominent Spanish tech entrepreneurs of that generation and seeded the capital and credibility behind Samaipata.

Earlier in his career, del Barrio worked in strategy and M&A advisory at PwC and Accenture, giving him a finance- and unit-economics-oriented lens that shows up in Samaipata's investment approach. The firm's unusual name comes from Samaipata, a valley in the Bolivian jungle he discovered during a hospital-expansion project in Latin America — a "micro world" of many nationalities that he adopted as a metaphor for the firm's values around diversity and teamwork.

Today Samaipata manages roughly €250m in assets across multiple funds and has backed 44+ European startups. In early 2026 the firm launched Samaipata III, a €110m fund (first close ~€70m) aimed at early-stage AI-native companies, backed by institutional LPs including Germany's KfW and Spain's SETT (Sociedad Española para la Transformación Tecnológica), alongside family offices and founders from previously backed companies. del Barrio remains based in Madrid and is a frequent voice on the European seed and startup ecosystem; outside work he is married with four daughters and competes as an Ironman athlete.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage: Leads seed / pre-Series A rounds — "We're a Seed investor, not a Series A investor," the point at which they can build a meaningful stake. Generally avoids pre-product pre-seed, with exceptions.
  • Check size & ownership: Initial tickets ~€1m–€4m (average ~€1.5m), striving for a minimum ~15% of the cap table, with follow-on reserves up to ~€10–15m per company; concentrated portfolios of ~25–35 companies per fund.
  • The core filter — network effects: Samaipata invests "only in early stage tech companies with network effects" — software platforms where "a company's product or service becomes more valuable as more users join the network or when usage/engagement between users increases," typically via many-to-many connections.
  • Sector-agnostic, ESG-screened: "We invest across all industries in B2B and B2C," excluding unethical or non-ESG-compliant businesses; explicitly avoids pure hardware/IoT, deeptech, biotech, asset-heavy models, and siloed enterprise SaaS lacking data network effects.
  • What makes them say yes: A market suited to a platform model (fragmentation), a credible path to a "€100M+ in annual gross margin / net revenues business," sound unit economics (LTV/CAC), and founders who retain >80% of equity at seed.
  • AI-native pivot (Fund III): Backing startups that "abstract the complexity of AI deployment into real-world use cases," primarily in B2B.
