Background
José Antonio Mesa is a Spanish life-sciences venture investor with over 15 years of experience backing biotech, diagnostics and medical-device companies. He holds an MSc in Genetics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2001) and an MSc in Corporate Finance from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (2005), complemented by an MBA (2003) and the Executive Development Program (PDD, 2011) from IESE Business School.
Mesa began his career in the business development department of Genzyme and in the Genoma España technology-transfer program, where he supported more than 100 patent applications between 2003 and 2006. He went on to lead the life sciences area of Caixa Capital Risc — the venture capital arm of CriteriaCaixa — until 2019, where he managed more than €100 million invested into life science companies and built a track record across therapeutics, diagnostics and medtech.
He subsequently became a Partner at Alta Life Sciences, the Barcelona-based venture firm (altals.com) that advises the ALSS I FCR fund and invests across the full life-sciences spectrum from seed financing to commercial growth. More recently he is listed as a Partner at Columbus Venture Partners, a healthcare-focused VC headquartered in Valencia with offices in Madrid, Barcelona and Boston. Across these roles he has sat on the boards of several of the most notable Spanish life-sciences companies, including Sanifit, Minoryx and Aelix (therapeutics), Stat-Dx and DeepUll (diagnostics), and Medlumics (medical devices).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in life sciences broadly: biotechnology, therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices, and health IT / health & hospital services.
- Backs companies from seed through Series B, writing checks of roughly $100K–$5M (sweet spot ~$1.5M).
- Looks for differentiated science with a credible clinical or regulatory path — his board track record skews toward companies that reach major milestones (acquisitions, large follow-on rounds).
- Frequently co-invests alongside other top European life-sciences funds — e.g., Joël Jean-Mairet (Ysios Capital), Alain Huriez (Advent Life Sciences) and Josep Ll. Sanfeliu (Asabys Partners) — signaling a syndicate-oriented approach.
- Brings an operator/technology-transfer background (Genzyme, Genoma España) plus large-fund discipline (€100M+ at Caixa Capital Risc), so he engages deeply on commercialization and IP, not just the science.
