Background

José Manuel Neves Adelino (born 19 March 1954) is a Portuguese finance academic and corporate governance specialist. He earned his Licenciatura in Finance from the Technical University of Lisbon (Universidade Técnica de Lisboa) in 1976, and completed a doctorate (DBA) in Finance at Kent State University in the United States in 1981. He has been a Full Professor of Finance at the Nova School of Business and Economics (Nova SBE, Universidade Nova de Lisboa) since 1981, and has served as a Visiting Professor at Bentley College.

At Nova SBE he was Dean of the school and Director of its MBA Program, and remains one of its most senior finance faculty. His teaching and research center on corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance, with a strong emphasis on the managerial application of finance. He was named CEMS "Professor of the Exclusive Course of the Year" for Applied Corporate Governance in 2009/2010 and again in 2011/2012.

Alongside his academic career, Neves Adelino built extensive practical experience as a consultant to Portuguese corporations and as an independent board member. He has served as a Non-Executive Independent Director of CIMPOR – Cimentos de Portugal SGPS and of Sonae SGPS, as a member of the Statutory Audit Committee of Banco BPI, and previously as a Non-Executive Independent Director of EDP.

In February 2014 he was appointed as an Executive Administrator (Trustee) of the Board of Directors of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation — one of Europe's largest philanthropic institutions — with a mandate running through the 2019–2024 term. In that capacity he also sat on the Management Board of the Gulbenkian Institute of Science and on the Board of Directors of Partex Oil and Gas (Holdings) Corporation, the energy group owned by the Foundation.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Institutional, not classic angel capital. The source stub tags him as an "Angel Investor / Seed Round," but the verifiable record shows a finance professor and Foundation trustee rather than a personal angel investor. Any capital he directs flows through the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's endowment and mission-driven initiatives, not a personal angel fund.
  • Impact economy and science. Through the Gulbenkian Foundation, his work touches philanthropic and endowment allocation across science, innovation, culture, and impact-oriented programs — including the Foundation's support of an impact-economy chair and initiatives at Nova SBE.
  • Corporate finance discipline. His stated academic focus is "corporate finance, mergers, acquisitions and corporate governance, with a particular emphasis on the managerial application of Finance" — a lens of governance, valuation rigor, and long-horizon stewardship rather than speculative early-stage betting.
  • Energy exposure via Partex. His board role at Partex Oil and Gas reflects the Foundation's direct industrial/energy holdings.

Notable Investments

  • Partex Oil and Gas (Holdings) Corporation — the Gulbenkian Foundation's oil-and-gas group; he served on its Board of Directors during his Foundation mandate.
  • Gulbenkian Institute of Science (Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência) — sat on its Management Board, overseeing one of Portugal's leading biomedical research institutions funded by the endowment.
  • *Note:* No verifiable record of personal startup/seed-stage angel investments was found; his board work is at the institutional and corporate level (CIMPOR, Sonae, Banco BPI, EDP, Partex).
