Background
José María Zalbidegoitia is a Bilbao-born economist (born around 1949) who, before joining Talde, built his early professional career in export credit insurance, international contracting, and accounts auditing. He was also a long-standing figure in Basque public and political life: he served as Viceconsejero de Comercio (Vice-Minister of Commerce) in the Basque Government in 1984, and for decades was the treasurer of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) within its top governing body (Euskadi Buru Batzar), a role he held until 2011. He is widely described in the Basque press as the PNV's historic "guardian of the finances."
In 1999 he was appointed to lead Talde, the pioneering Basque private-equity house founded in 1976 with backing from leading Basque families and savings banks (BBK, later Kutxabank, was historically a major shareholder). As president and chief executive, he ran the firm for 25 years until February 2025. Under his leadership Talde positioned itself as, in his own framing, "a shield to prevent vulture funds from buying Basque companies," concentrating capital on small and medium-sized industrial and service companies in the region.
During his tenure Talde broadened beyond classic equity into private debt: it launched its first private-debt fund in Bizkaia in 2019 (targeting €100M for SMEs with expansion projects) and lined up a further ~€100M debt fund for early 2024, including a €20M facility from the European Investment Bank for SME lending. By the mid-2020s the firm managed three vehicles with combined assets exceeding €297M.
In February 2025, following Kutxabank taking control of Talde, Zalbidegoitia stepped down as president; Fernando del Hoyo (a Kutxabank wholesale-business executive) was named president and Idoia Bengoa took over day-to-day management as managing partner. Zalbidegoitia remained as non-executive president of Talde's oldest managed vehicle. In 2024 he received the Honorary Award at the 17th Spanish Private Equity Awards.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs established, profitable SMEs — primarily in the Basque Country and Spain — rather than early-stage startups; the stub's "seed/angel" tag does not match Talde's mandate.
- Invests through both growth/expansion equity and private debt, designing and executing strategic plans focused on organic growth, internationalization, and sector consolidation.
- Generalist, sector-agnostic approach across industrial and service businesses, with selective technology/aerospace exposure.
- Stated mission of protecting Basque industrial ownership: Talde as "the shield that can prevent vulture funds from buying Basque companies."
- On what drives results, he has credited disciplined teamwork — attributing success to having had "smart, demanding bosses and good collaborators… people who always knew more than me."
Notable Investments
- AVS (Added Value Solutions) — Basque space/aerospace engineering and advanced-systems company; a flagship holding in Talde's equity portfolio.
- Burdinberri — Basque industrial/components company held in Talde's capital portfolio.
- Talde's equity area carried a portfolio of roughly 12 active holdings in SMEs as of 2024–2025.
- In November 2024, Talde completed its first portfolio exit/sale following Kutxabank's acquisition of the firm.
