Background
José Antonio Jiménez is a founding partner of Activa Alternative Assets, the private-equity and alternative-assets arm established by LarrainVial (founded in 2005). Activa describes itself as one of Latin America's largest and most diversified private-equity firms, with US$750+ million in capital commitments across roughly six active investment platforms and 17 funds or investment vehicles spanning multiple industries, geographies and asset classes — holding controlling interests in nearly all of its investments. Jiménez sits at the top of this structure as a founding partner and president.
He is best known as Chairman / Founding Partner of Minería Activa, the mining-focused private-equity manager launched in 2008 as a joint venture between Activa and a team of seasoned mining executives. Since late 2008 he has built out Activa's mining franchise, raising multiple funds including Minería Activa I and II, Minería Activa III, a Fénix/Corfo-backed fund focused on rare earths, and Geo Activa. He also served as Vice President of SCL Energía Activa, the energy-investment vehicle created in 2008 between LarrainVial and former executives of AES Gener.
Before his investing career, Jiménez held a series of senior operating and finance roles in Chilean industry: CEO (General Manager) of Viña Santa Carolina (winery) and CFO of Watt's (food/consumer company), along with earlier stints at Endesa (power utility) and Ladeco (the airline now part of LATAM Airlines). He also served as a board member of LarrainVial's Asset Management business for roughly 11 years. He holds a business-administration degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates as an institutional private-equity investor, not an angel — typically taking controlling interests in companies and assets rather than minority venture stakes.
- Stated strategy is to provide "both financial resources and operational expertise to help transform undervalued and underperforming companies and assets into long-term success and value creation."
- Focuses on real assets and natural resources in Latin America: mining, energy, agriculture/forestry, food and healthcare/infrastructure.
- In mining specifically, Minería Activa targets assets "in different stages of development, ranging from mining properties with no studies to mining operations" — i.e., spanning greenfield exploration through producing operations.
- Strong thematic interest in critical minerals / rare earths (the Fénix–Corfo fund) and medium-scale mining in Chile and the broader region.
Notable Investments
