Background
Justin Ryan is one of Australia's most experienced private equity investors, with a career in the industry dating to 1997. He began at Catalyst Investment Managers, and later served as CEO/Managing Director of ASX-200 listed building-products group Alesco Corporation, which was acquired by DuluxGroup in 2011. He chaired the Australian Venture Capital Association (AVCAL, now the Australian Investment Council) in 2003. Across his career he has led more than 20 private equity investments (Glow cites 26 since 1997, with 21 fully exited), nine of which have received "Deal of the Year"–style outstanding-deal recognition from the Australian Investment Council.
Ryan spent more than a decade as a Managing Partner at Quadrant Private Equity, one of Australia's leading buyout firms, which he joined in 2011. He was elevated to Managing Partner in 2015 (alongside Marcus Darville) as founder Chris Hadley moved to executive chairman, and latterly led Quadrant's growth-fund strategy. During his Quadrant tenure the firm owned businesses such as Amart Furniture / Barbeques Galore, Zip Industries (sold to Culligan for roughly US$550m in 2017) and quick-service brands including Red Rooster and Oporto.
In 2021–2022 Ryan stepped back from Quadrant to co-found Glow Capital Partners with Kate Morris, the founder of online beauty retailer Adore Beauty. At Glow he is Managing Partner and chairs the investment committee. The firm targeted a A$200–300m first fund and closed Growth Fund I at roughly A$90m, with family offices and high-net-worth individuals making up a large share of the corpus; it relies heavily on LP co-investment to reach deal scale. Glow is structured as a B-Corp with an explicit ESG/culture emphasis.
Ryan holds an MBA from The Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws (BEc LLB) from the University of Sydney. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD) and of the Securities Institute (FSIA), chairs the 20 Beaches Foundation, and is a director of the NT Indigenous... (NTAIC).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established, profitable, founder-led SMEs in Australia and New Zealand with strong growth potential — later-stage growth equity, not early/seed venture.
- Focus on consumer and digital/e-commerce brands and services — Glow describes itself as investing in "high-growth brands and businesses" and "future-focused businesses."
- Backs "breakout growth opportunities within the small-to-medium enterprise sector," with an emphasis on proprietary, off-market deal sourcing over auctions (Glow reviewed 700+ deals to make its first proprietary investments).
- Looks for businesses "led by experienced teams with deep sector expertise" that are "creating enduring companies who always put their customers at the heart of what they do."
- Values culture, purpose and strong employee/customer connection; Glow operates as a certified B-Corp with ESG commitments.
- Describes himself as "a big fan of partnering with innovative entrepreneurs and founders," pairing capital with hands-on operating support (Glow has dedicated operating partners).
