Background

Justin Webb is a serial entrepreneur and investor best known as the co-founder and Executive Chairman of AgriWebb, the Sydney-headquartered livestock farm-management software company he started in 2013–2014 with Kevin Baum (Silicon Valley SaaS experience) and John Fargher. AgriWebb has grown to manage more than 15 million head of livestock across roughly 90 million acres, with an international footprint spanning the UK, South Africa, Brazil and the USA, and was valued at over A$100 million following external investment from an NYSE-listed strategic investor. His connection to agriculture is personal: he has a five-generation family history in livestock production and grew up partly at Eddington Station in Victoria.

Before AgriWebb, Webb built a career at the intersection of quantitative finance and machine learning. He founded and grew two long/short quantitative hedge funds that applied machine-learning and AI algorithms, selling them to Macquarie Bank (2007) and Westpac (2010). He went on to co-found PacWealth Capital, building it into a roughly A$3–4 billion asset-advisory firm in the South Pacific serving sovereign and institutional investors. He has also held senior roles at major institutions, including Senior Portfolio Manager at Macquarie Bank and Co-Head/Director of the ~A$60 billion Retail Client Business for BlackRock Australia/New Zealand.

Academically, Webb studied Economics and Applied Mathematics at Harvard University and completed a postgraduate MBA at Oxford. Across his career as a founder of four companies, he has concurrently served as Investment Director for his family office, where he combines his applied-mathematics training with his father's Fortune 500 business experience to inform private investment decisions.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at the early/seed stage, drawing on his experience that "there is a tremendous amount of investment return opportunity by disciplined investment approaches in the early stages of a company life-cycle."
  • Describes his approach as a blend of "art & science": *"Seeking companies with robust and defensibly scalable business propositions coupled to exceptional founding executive teams typically lays the bedrock of statistically reliable early-stage venture investment."*
  • Applies quantitative models and non-linear analytical tooling to early-stage decisions, aiming to "unlock a competitive advantage over the vast majority of institutional VC firms."
  • Looks to add value beyond capital by lending or strengthening an "unfair advantage" through his own commercial relationships — de-risking founders strategically.
  • Evaluates "the vision, the opportunity, the market context and the entrepreneur" concurrently, with heavy weight on the quality and execution capability of the founding team.
  • AgTech is his strongest sector conviction, arguing agriculture is "the only industry that…can become sustainably and demonstrably carbon negative" through technology adoption.
