Background
Kamal Ravikant is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, investor, and bestselling author who serves as Managing Partner of Evolve VC, an early-stage venture fund based in San Francisco. He studied at the University of Rochester (economics/biology) and served as a U.S. Army infantry soldier before entering technology. He has been building companies in Silicon Valley since the late 1990s, when he founded his first startup, Revnetics, and he has co-founded several companies and a venture firm over his career.
His path into full-time investing was shaped by a personal low point: in 2011, a company he had nurtured for roughly a decade collapsed, sending him into a serious depression. Out of that experience he wrote *Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends On It*, which he self-published on Amazon and which sold hundreds of thousands of copies without a publisher, advance, or marketing team. He followed it with *Live Your Truth* and *Rebirth: A Fable of Love, Forgiveness, and Following Your Heart*, and HarperCollins published an expanded edition of *Love Yourself* in 2020. Alongside writing, he is a speaker on self-love and resilience — themes drawn from meditating with monks in the Himalayas and walking the ~550-mile Camino de Santiago across Spain.
Kamal is the brother of Naval Ravikant, the AngelList co-founder and widely followed investor, and the two frequently co-invest. Evolve VC's advisor network has included Naval Ravikant and author/investor James Altucher, and Kamal's long tenure and relationships in the Valley give him access to strong early-stage deal flow.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at pre-seed, seed, and Series A, typically writing checks around $100K, often as part of syndicates and frequently co-investing with his brother Naval Ravikant.
- Bets on the founder over the plan: "You're not in the trenches. You're not the one who's going to be solving that problem" — the job is to judge whether the founder can execute, not to solve the problem yourself.
- Prioritizes a founder's ability to recruit: "Can they motivate really [good] people... to join them? You got that, it's a no-brainer."
- Values founder longevity and obsession — pointing to Bezos, Brin, Zuckerberg, and Musk — and looks for a "small bunch of passionate users" and real market validation over grand billion-dollar visions.
- Largely skips traditional due-diligence rituals (business plans, spreadsheets, financial projections) in favor of extensive founder conversations and founder–market–product fit.
- Sector interests span SaaS, e-commerce, fintech, and Web3/crypto, extending to AI, future of work, and health & wellness technology.
