Karen Cunningham

Karen Cunningham is a chartered professional accountant (CPA, CA) who built her career largely in New Brunswick's public sector before becoming one of the University of New Brunswick's senior administrators. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce from Mount Allison University and obtained her Chartered Accountant designation through the New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants while articling with Doane Raymond (now Grant Thornton) in Fredericton. Prior to joining UNB she spent roughly 20 years in progressive leadership roles with the Government of New Brunswick.

She joined UNB in 2012 as university comptroller. Following the retirement of Dan Murray, she served as acting Vice-President beginning in September 2014 and was formally appointed Vice-President (Administration and Finance) in August 2015. In that role she led UNB's central administrative units — financial services, human resources, information technology, capital planning, and facilities management — until her retirement in 2022. UNB President Eddy Campbell described her at the time of appointment as "a highly talented finance professional who leads with strength and integrity."

Since retiring from full-time university administration, Cunningham has remained active in governance and the regional entrepreneurship ecosystem.
